About This Workshop

This workshop is designed to help participants learn the elements of effective and compelling data visualizations for their research posters, presentations, reports, or publications. Core topics include defining the focus of the visualization based on audience and goals, selecting the correct chart type appropriate for your data and research question (such as for comparisons, proportions, relationships, or hierarchy), effective use of color, and applying proper fonts, labels, and annotations to enhance readability and reduce visual clutter.

Learning Objectives

  • Distinguish many ways to visualize the same dataset, and recall what the factors are that can help you choose the most effective visualization design.
  • Use graphic design elements to see and show patterns, to tell stories, and to accommodate the perceptual needs of your audience.
  • Get help from the Libraries and reference other helpful resources
