Shout-outs From My Colleagues
Shout-outs are kind words from Libraries staff to other Libraries staff for going out of their way to be extra awesome at their job.
Last week's Accessibility in STEM Conference was amazing and part of the reason why was because of great library colleagues like Aasta Thomas, Alexa Carter and Troy Hurteau. Alexa did such a great job working with the College of Engineering to get put the event together and make sure everyone felt at welcome at Hunt Library. Aasta and Troy took time away from their conference/work day to help with our basic document accessibility workshop. While all of my workshop plans didn't go exactly as I had imagined, Troy and Aasta made it all work whether it was locating emergency microphones or discussing alt-text for complicated circuit diagrams. The attendees were great and we had a super collaborative session where I think everyone learned something. I feel so lucky to work with such smart, talented, helpful, and supportive colleagues!

A big thank you to Troy, Beth and Danica for their help and advice on accessibility assessment of NC LIVE's subscription resources. Their guidance has been hugely beneficial in working on accessibility compliance for databases available to libraries across North Carolina. Also, a special shout-out to Troy for his time and expertise in reviewing VPATs!

When we recently had a last-minute need to swap some content for the Art Wall at Hunt Library, Troy stepped in at 5 p.m. on a Friday to save the day. This is just one example of the kind of thing Troy does all the time. Not only is he a pleasure to work with, but he’s also thoughtful, technically adept, and always ready to find creative solutions to problems. I’m grateful to have him as a colleague.

Troy is the kind of co-worker you dream of being on a committee with! They are so smart, have so many amazing skills, and are excited to share all of it with you. The Collections and Materials Working Group of the Accessibility Committee just completed an evaluation of our ebook platforms and it would not have been possible without Troy's advice, expertise, and work to create documentation on the best way to evaluate websites and PDF documents. Accessibility is a discipline where you are always learning and I learn so much from Troy every time we get together.

As a member of the Libraries' EDI committee, Troy recently organized reading groups for any staff interested in discussing Whistling Vivaldi: How Stereotypes Affect Us and What We Can Do by Claude Steele. Troy did fantastic work to organize multiple reading groups, provide questions for reflection, and facilitate the discussions. I greatly appreciate his thoughtful approach to providing this learning and community-building opportunity for colleagues! Thanks, Troy!
