Secondary Data and the IRB

Designed for researchers who want to use existing data for their study, this workshop covers how to ethically reuse information and biospecimens originally generated or collected for non-research or prior research purposes—such as student records, medical charts, and social media content. You will learn when secondary data projects require IRB review, how to navigate consent requirements and future data use, and best practices for collecting online data securely. The session also covers data management, repository use, and practical tips for completing secondary data IRB protocols. Please note: This workshop supplements, but does not replace, IRB Basics Parts 2, 3A, or 3B

To foster an engaging environment and protect real-time discussions, this live workshop will not be recorded. Learners are asked to join on time, keep webcams on, and remain fully present and engaged throughout the workshop. The use of AI recording assistants, transcription tools, or external recording software is strictly prohibited. Attendees utilizing these tools will be immediately removed from the workshop. Workshop Prerequisite & Eligibility: Students—including graduate students who hold faculty or staff roles—must successfully complete IRB Basics Part 1 or obtain instructor permission to enroll. REPORTER will not allow students to register for this workshop unless they have either already completed IRB Basics: Part 1, have an active registration for an IRB Basics Part 1 instance that will take place before the Secondary Data and the IRB workshop, or have instructor permission to enroll. Non-student faculty and staff are exempt from the training prerequisite.

To request a prerequisite waiver, email IRB-Coordinator-Ed@ncsu.edu detailing your experience with IRB applications and review processes as well as your understanding of the differences between exempt and non-exempt studies. Please note: Completing the CITI Human Subjects Research Basic course or a graduate-level research methods course does not qualify for a prerequisite waiver.
