Fabulous Faculty: Joseph DeSimone

Professor Joseph DeSimone will talk about his recent Lemelson-MIT Prize for invention and innovation. In addition, this presentation will focus on the technology and the people behind recent research efforts to translate promising drug delivery discoveries into benefits for patients.

Joseph DeSimone is a professor of chemical engineering at NCSU and is the William R. Kenan Jr. Distinguished Professor of chemistry at UNC-Chapel Hill. DeSimone recently launched Liquidia Technologies to commercialize recent breakthroughs from his laboratory. The results from DeSimone’s laboratory became the foundation for the new $26.3 million Carolina Center for Cancer Nanotechnology Excellence funded by the National Cancer Institute.

DeSimone has published more than 200 scientific articles and has over 100 patents in his name. He has won many awards and honors. In 1999, DeSimone became director of the $40 million NSF Science and Technology Center for Environmentally Responsible Solvents and Processes, and in 2005 he was elected into the National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
