LEGO Play Workshop for Library Staff

The NCSU Libraries Makerspace and User Experience department invite you to a workshop a LEGO Play workshop taught by visiting librarian Megan Lotts, Art Librarian at Rutgers University. This workshop will cover the ideas of teamwork, active learning, play, and pop-up making spaces within academic libraries.  Throughout this workshop individuals will use LEGO bricks to solve real world problems faced in academic libraries.

Lotts was introduced to the LEGO SERIOUS PLAY methodology at the “i2c2, Innovation, Inspiration, and Creativity” conference in Manchester, UK in 2014. Lego states, LEGO SERIOUS PLAY methodology is “based on research which shows that this kind of hands-on, minds-on learning produces a deeper, more meaningful understanding of the world and its possibilities.”

The D. H. Hill Jr. Makerspace has a variety of LEGO sets and bricks (including the LEGO Architecture Studio)  that are available to Makerspace users and library staff to use in their own workshops and projects.

Related Research Project

In October/November of 2015, Lotts will be visiting roughly 25 university libraries to facilitate Lego Play workshops with library staff. The workshop lasts roughly 1.5 hours and includes solving problems with Legos, and a group building exercise. Workshop participation is voluntary and there is no cost involved. Following the workshop participants will be invited to fill out a paper survey that will take no longer than 5 minutes to complete. The anonymous responses will be used to write a publishable paper to be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal. All study data will be kept for three years. There are no foreseeable risks to participation in this study.
