Register for the Open Climate Data Science Workshop

Open Climate Data Science Workshop

The Libraries is an organizing partner of the Open Climate Data Science Workshop to be held virtually on March 1-2 and March 8-9. The workshop aims to facilitate collaborations between communities, organizations, climate scientists, and data scientists with shared goals and interests and to build capacity to use publicly available data and reproducible science to address climate change.

The application deadline to attend is Sunday, Jan. 23 at midnight. Registration information can be found on the workshop site.

Climate change affects every corner of North Carolina. Resource managers, communities, businesses, and other stakeholders are faced with myriad challenges posed by a hotter, wetter, and more humid climate. Climate science research, when conducted and produced alongside stakeholders, has the opportunity to positively impact communities in North Carolina and beyond as they prepare for, respond to, and adapt to climate change.

The Open Climate Data Science Workshop, supported by the Office of Research and Innovation, aims to initiate conversations between NC State University researchers and North Carolina communities while facilitating open data science training, building trust in comprehensive data-driven approaches for addressing climate change, and developing collaboration mechanisms for climate change resilience projects in the State of North Carolina.

“We are excited about this opportunity to advance data science and the opening up of research and knowledge, particularly around the important challenge of climate resilience,” says Micah Vandegrift, Open Knowledge Librarian. “As a co-planner for this workshop, I am especially committed to establishing creative connections between data holders, data specialists, and those that utilize data to tell stories. Our hope is that this workshop, which was hatched at the Research Symposium in 2021, is just a first step along the path to better understanding and partnerships across the state.”

The organizing partners for the workshop are NC State University, the NC State University Libraries, the North Carolina Climate Office, the Southeast Climate Adaptation Science Center, and the North Carolina Institute for Climate Studies.
