Learning Commons Gets Late-Night Staff

The NCSU Libraries recently appointed Jennifer Calvo as Reference Librarian for the Learning Commons, effective August 1 2007, and Harlin Jones, Library Associate for the Learning Commons, effective August 7, 2007.

In just two months following the opening of the Learning Commons in March 2007, late-night use of the D. H. Hill Jr. Library increased by more than 100%, and this trend is certain to continue during the upcoming academic year. To better support our users round-the-clock, the Libraries will launch overnight reference service beginning Fall 2007 with these two positions, and will continue to study the ideal composition of late-night staffing throughout the 2007-08 academic year.

Calvo and Jones will work as a team to support late evening and overnight research and reference services and offer assistance with the technology, multimedia, and other resources in the Commons. Their presence will help us to increase monitoring and management of the safety and security of our facility during the overnight hours.

Jennifer Calvo has worked as a graduate student assistant in the Research and Information Services department of the NCSU Libraries for several years. She received the Master of Library Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Harlin Jones worked for the NCSU Libraries as the Overnight Circulation Supervisor for four and a half years. In addition to carrying out reference and research services, Jones will assist with the delivery and operations of the laptop/device lending service. He is currently pursuing the Master of Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
