Courses in bacteriology have been offered at North Carolina State University since 1894-1895, when one course was offered through the Department of Horticulture, Aboriculture, and Botany. In the following decades, the program gradually expanded as several new courses were added. During the 1950s bacteriology began to establish a larger presence at North Carolina State College. Increased faculty support led to more research, course offerings, and funding. The program continued to grow with the approval of a doctoral degree in 1961, and the Department of Microbiology was officially established in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences in 1965. As of 2010, the Department of Microbiology employs over fifteen faculty members and enrolls over 35 graduate students. It offers a doctoral degree, three Master's degrees, and an undergraduate major and minor.
Courses in bacteriology have been offered at North Carolina State University since 1894-1895, when a course in bacteriology was offered through the Department of Horticulture, Aboriculture, and Botany. In the following decades, the program gradually expanded as several new courses were added, such as Advanced Bacteriology in 1905 and Soil Microbiology in 1931. A course in Dairy Bacteriology was taught from 1899 to 1916 and then added again in 1945.
During the 1950s bacteriology began to establish a larger presence at NC State University. Increased faculty support led to more research, course offerings, and funding. The program continued to grow with the approval of a doctoral degree in 1961, and the Department of Microbiology was officially established in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences in 1965. In 1967, the Department moved into its first permanent home, a newly constructed addition to Gardner Hall. In 2013 the programs of the Department of Microbiology were subsumed under the new Department of Biological Sciences in the new College of Sciences.

This series is arranged in three subseries. The first contains letters and memoranda written by and addressed to the Microbiology Department Head and is arranged chronologically. The second series contains financial records such as department budget proposals and budgets for N. C. State's Agricultural Research Station. It is arranged alphabetically by subject and chronologically within each subject. The third series contains minutes, correspondence, memorandum, and reports from the the Biological Sciences Advisory Board and its predecessor, the Institute of Biological Sciences. It is arranged chronologically.

This series contains proposals and outlines for facutly research projects at N. C. State's Agricultural Experiment Station, applications and funding information for fellowships and assistantships, reports summarizing faculty teaching and research, and course information. Of special interest is the folder about Sweet Acidophilus Milk research, which includes research reports as well as newspaper articles and letters addressing the lawsuit and publicity related to the project.

The first is arranged numerically by FAS account number, the second is arranged alphabetically by the name of the organization sponsoring the grant or trust fund, and the third is arranged numerically by trust fund number and chronologically therein. The third series contains a substantial amount of information about research done through the Peanut Collaborative Research Support Project (CRSP) managed by the University of Georgia and funded by the United States Agency for International Development (U.S. AID). It includes information about work done in Thailand and the Philippines.
