These records document the architectural projects of Ballard, McCredie Associates from its beginning in 1955 until its dissolution in 1998. They consist primarily of architectural drawings, project files, photographs and slides. The commissions include primary and secondary schools, churches, banks, state and federal research laboratories and offices, and university buildings. The records survey 70 selected projects of the approximately 320 projects designed and constructed by the firm. In 1955, architect Jesse M. Page founded an architectural firm in Raleigh, North Carolina under the name Jesse M. Page & Associates. From its beginning, the small firm was involved in the design and construction of many educational and institutional facilities. Their numerous educational projects include primary and secondary schools throughout central and eastern North Carolina, often reflecting the different goals and needs required of rural and urban schools. Ballard, McCredie Associates also worked on many projects reflecting the rapid pace and change of scientific research during the late twentieth century. Their commissions parallel this change with the needs of educational and federal institutions to keep pace with new technologies. Restoration commissions were also part of their work. The Catherine W. Bishir Papers chiefly contain research documentation compiled during the creation of North Carolina Architects and Builders, both for the book and also for the web-based platform, and for other articles and books written by Bishir, including her work on monuments in the American South. Among the files are many photographs of buildings and sites, mostly in North Carolina, organized by county. Launched in 2009, North Carolina Architects and Builders is a reference work that contains brief biographical accounts, building lists, and bibliographical information about architects, builders, and other artisans who planned and built North Carolina's architecture. Bishir is author or co-author of several prize-winning publications, including North Carolina Architecture; Architects and Builders in North Carolina: A History of the Practice of Building; the three-volume Guides to the Historic Architecture of Eastern, Western, and Piedmont North Carolina; Southern Built: American Architecture, Regional Practice; and, most recently, Crafting Lives: African American Artisans in New Bern, North Carolina, 1770-1900s. From 1971 through 2001 she served as staff member and supervisor for the architectural survey and National Register of Historic Places programs in the North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office. She then served as senior architectural historian with the non-profit organization, Preservation North Carolina. As adjunct professor at North Carolina State University Department of Architecture she taught classes in vernacular architecture and North Carolina architecture. She was Curator of Architecture for Special Collections at North Carolina State University Libraries, where she was instrumental in the web-based North Carolina Architects and Builders: A Biographical Dictionary (ncarchitects.lib.ncsu.edu) and in collecting architectural drawings and other records. The D. J. Rose and Son Architectural Drawings and Project Files consist of architectural drawings, project files, blueprints, and other materials relating to the construction projects of D. J. Rose and Son. These materials date from approximately 1907 to 1970. The hundreds of rolls of architectural drawings include works by some of North Carolina's leading architects, such as Benton and Benton of Wilson, North Carolina, John C. Stout of Rocky Mount, NC, and Joseph F. Leitner of Wilmington, NC. The collection also contains materials relating to the business operations of D. J. Rose and Son, including bank statements, receipts, invoices, personal journals, and correspondences. David Jeptha Rose (1861-1940) was a lifelong builder who moved from Johnston County to Rocky Mount in 1890. Rose established D. J. Rose and Son which is the oldest continuously operating general contracting firm in North Carolina. Rose's sons, Ira Woodall Rose and Dillon Jeptha Rose, joined the firm in 1930. After Rose's death in 1940, Ira and Dillon led the opeations of the company. The company completed construction projects not only in Rocky Mount, but throughout the eastern United States. Among their construction projects were textile and tobacco mills, banks, courthouses, railroad stations, power plants, hospitals, churches, and many other commercial and residential buildings. They worked with clients such as Carolina Telephone and Telegram, Atlantic Coastline Railroad, financial institutions, and pharmaceutical companies. The year 2015 marked D. J. The Harrye B. Lyons Design Library Vertical Files, 1939-1992, contains books, serials, brochures, and other reference materials relating to various subjects in architecture gathered by the Harrye B. Lyon Design Library. The collection is organized into four series: Architectural Works, Guidelines and Regulations, Publicity, and Design Competitions and Projects. Architectural works includes books, serials, brochures, essays, and other materials relating to buildings, projects, and other architectural works. Guidelines and regulations include books, serials, manuals, and other materials relating to architectural guidelines, regulations, and other specifications in various subject matters. Publicity material includes books, brochures, and other materials that publicize the lives and works of various architects and architectural firms. Design competitions and projects includes reports, manuals, and other publications relating to design competitions and projects. Few items relate to the School of Design. The dates of this collection range from 1939 to 1992; several items are undated. The Harrye B. Lyons Design Library supports the North Carolina State University College of Design and has collection emphases in architecture, landscape architecture, graphic design, industrial design, and art and design. The MacMillan and MacMillan Architectural Papers, 1919, 1950-2010, document the professional activities of Dan and Frank MacMillan and their architectural firm. The collection consists of architectural drawings with various iterations of designs, blueprints, construction documents, prospective elevations, technical drawings, and related materials. MacMillan and MacMillan’s projects include mostly private residences, with a small number of subdivision developments. Also included in the collection are drawings of landscape architecture projects by Richard C. Bell, done in collaboration with MacMillan and MacMillan projects. There is also a series of photographs from the period (1950-1952) in which the Dorton Arena was under construction; Dan MacMillan worked on the Dorton Arena as a project engineer for Muirhead Construction. Dan (1921- ) and Frank (d. 1991) MacMillan were born in Fayetteville, North Carolina and were principals in the MacMillan and MacMillan architectural firm. Dan MacMillan graduated from North Carolina State University in 1948 and worked for several years with the architect Jim Webb and then as a project engineer for Muirhead Construction on Raleigh’s Dorton Arena. In 1952 Dan MacMillan founded his firm, Dan MacMillan Architect and Associates in Fayetteville. After his brother, Frank, received his architecture license in the early 1950s Dan partnered with him and the firm was renamed MacMillan and MacMillan. Frank MacMillan died in 1991.
