The Gil Wheless Papers, 1960-2016, document the professional activities of Gilbert B. Wheless and the landscape architectural firm Environmental Design Associates PC (EDA). The collection is arranged into four series: drawings, photographic materials, project files, and electronic materials. Drawings include blueprints, sketches, and working drawings, mainly representing a variety of projects undertaken by Wheless and EDA, as well as architectural and engineering firms with which they worked. Photographic materials include prints, negatives, and slides depicting the design, construction, and completion of various projects, including residences and residential pools. Project files include EDA promotional materials, reference files, correspondence, sketches and project lists. Electronic files are primarily CDs containing photographs and documents relating to projects. This collection does not document the full extent of projects designed by EDA; it primarily represents just those projects on which Wheless worked. Gilbert B. Wheless, Jr. is a landscape architect who grew up in Durham, North Carolina. He graduated from Durham High School in 1960 and entered the School of Design (now College of Design) at North Carolina State University in 1961. In 1962, he began to focus on landscape architecture and studied under Lewis Clarke and Richard Moore. In 1970 Wheless, Donald Ferlow, and John Soluri became founding principals of Environmental Design Associates, PC. In the 2009, Wheless retired from the firm and returned to Durham. Less

Lyon Design Library. The collection is organized into four series: Architectural Works, Guidelines and Regulations, Publicity, and Design Competitions and Projects. Architectural works includes books, serials, brochures, essays, and other materials relating to buildings, projects, and other architectural works. Guidelines and regulations include books, serials, manuals, and other materials relating to architectural guidelines, regulations, and other specifications in various subject matters. Publicity material includes books, brochures, and other materials that publicize the lives and works of various architects and architectural firms. Design competitions and projects includes reports, manuals, and other publications relating to design competitions and projects. Few items relate to the School of Design. The dates of this collection range from 1939 to 1992; several items are undated. The Harrye B. Lyons Design Library supports the North Carolina State University College of Design and has collection emphases in architecture, landscape architecture, graphic design, industrial design, and art and design. The collection contains the business and design records from James M. Webb's architectural firm, as well as his personal papers and some papers of his brother, John B. Webb, and his mother, Martha Webb. The major groupings of records are Project Files, Drawings, Maps, Professional Papers, Personal Papers, Photographs and Slides, Videos, Artifacts, John B. Webb, and Martha Webb. James Murray Webb was born in 1908 and died in 2000. In 1947, he joined the new City and Regional Planning School at the University of North Carolina (UNC) in Chapel Hill, where he served as a faculty member for thirty years. He and his brother, John Bruce Webb, maintained an architectural practice in Chapel Hill and designed a number of modernist houses and other buildings in the area. Less

The Leslie N. Boney Architectural Papers document the work of Wilmington, North Carolina, architects Leslie N. Boney Sr., and Leslie N. Boney Jr. from projects done in conjunction with architect James F. Gause in the 1920s through projects of Boney Architects, Inc., in the 1980s. Educational institution plans make up a significant portion of the project files in this collection, representing schools from the elementary through university levels. The firm's architectural projects also include churches, banks, residences, offices, libraries, and retail establishments. The vast majority of these buildings are located in North Carolina, especially in the eastern part of the state, though a small number of South Carolina projects are included as well. These project files include correspondence, inspection reports, drawings, blueprints, project specifications, photographs, contracts, and bid data and forms. Personal papers of Leslie N. Boney Sr., make up a small part of this collection, and include copies of textiles, chemistry, and English exams dating from 1901 to 1903, belonging to Leslie N. Boney Sr., C. L. Creech, and O. Max Gardner. A copy of Boney Sr.'s account of the 1901 fire that destroyed NC State University's original Watauga Hall, as printed in the 1903 Agromeck, is also included. North Carolina native Leslie N. Boney Sr. (1880-1964) graduated from the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) in 1903 with a degree in textile engineering. Boney joined Wilmington architect James F. Gause as a partner in practice in 1918, then took over the practice in 1922, upon Gause's retirement. Boney's eldest son, Leslie N. Boney Jr. (1920-2003), joined his father's practice after graduating from the College of Engineering at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) in 1940 with a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering. Boney Jr. served in the Army Corps of Engineers during World War II, earning the rank of major, and returned to his family's architectural practice following the war. Boney Jr. was a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, served as president of North Carolina's chapter of the American Institute of Architects, and was a recipient of North Carolina State University's prestigious Watauga Medal in 1996. This collection contains 7 black-and-white 3 x 5 inch photographic prints showing Frank Lloyd Wright visiting North Carolina State College on 16 May 1950. These photographs were taken on 16 May 1950 when Frank Lloyd Wright visited North Carolina State College. During the visit, Wright addressed an audience, of reportedly over 5,000 people, in the newly completed Reynolds Coliseum. This was allegedly the largest audience he was ever to address, one of the largest audiences ever to hear an architectural lecture in the United States, and was to signal the importance of the School of Design in American architectural education. Often reflective in nature, the papers reinforce Shogren's reputation as a professor who made his students think. This collection consists of student papers written for Professor Vernon F. Shogren. These papers were written primarily for his Conceptual Issues in Architecture and Vernon F. Shogren was born and raised in Cloquet, Minnesota. In 1950 he received a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Minnesota. He earned a Master of Architecture degree from the Massachussettes Institute of Technology in 1952. As a Fulbright Scholar during 1952-1953, he earned a certificate from the Technische Hogeschole, Delft, Netherlands. Afterwards Shogren returned to the United States and began teaching at the North Carolina State University School of Design. He left the school in 1955 but returned in 1961 to teach until his retirement in 1992. He distinguished himself as a challenging teacher who focused on conceptual issues. In 1964-65 and 1969-70, Shogren was named to the Academy of Outstanding Teachers, and from 1972-75 he held a Distinguished Alumni Professorship. Shogren's practice experience includes a number of years with Eero Saarinen and Associates in addition to projects such as the London and Oslo embassies and University of Chicago Law School.
