The Sallie Ricks Collection of North Carolina State University College of Design Flyers and Brochures contains mailers about upcoming events. Events include lecture series, exhibitions, gallery openings, and receptions. Materials range in date from 1978 to 1985. The Samuel B. Tove Papers consist largely of materials, 1962-1967, related to Tove's membership on an advisory committee that formulated proposals for the establishment of a doctoral program in biochemistry at the North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University). Other materials in this collection document Tove's membership in three other committees at North Carolina State: the program committee of the university's annual Animal Nutrition Conference, an ad hoc building committee on improvements to Polk Hall, and the Watauga Medal selection committee. Samuel B. Tove (1921-1994) of Baltimore, Maryland, was a researcher and professor of animal science and biochemistry at North Carolina State University from 1950 to 1987. The Samuel S. Scherr Papers document the professional and personal life of Samuel Scherr. The primary focus of this collection is Sherr's career as an industrial designer, but it also includes information about Scherr's private life, especially his time in the Army during World War II. The collection contains patent information, drawings, trademarks, pictures, sketches, videos, correspondence, and personal memorabilia from World War II. The collection spans the early 1940s to 2002. Samuel S. Scherr (1923-2002), industrial and product designer, was president of Scherr & McDermott, a design firm working in the fields of industrial, environmental, and graphic design. In 1955 as CEO and President of Scherr & McDermott, collaborating with the International Cooperation Administration, Scherr helped establish the Korean Small Scale Industry & Handicraft Design Center in South Korea. In 1977, Samuel Scherr became the President of the American Crafts Council, a position he held for two years. The Sanford R. Winston Collection primarily contains documents from the 1930s and 1940s, when Winston was head of the Department of Sociology at North Carolina State College. The collection includes correspondence, speeches, and writings related to Winston's interests in rural sociology, African-American issues, and leadership. Materials about his career activities and the organizations to which he belonged are included in the collection, as well as planning documents and descriptions of the S.R. Correspondence, 1895-1905 and undated, between Sarah J. Eddy and Albert Leffingwell, chiefly on the subject of anti-vivisectionism. Sarah J. Eddy (1851-1945) of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, was an artist and photographer who was active in reform movements. She was an animal welfare activist and vegetarian, who was instrumental in founding the Rhode Island Humane Education Association. Albert Leffingwell, M.D. (1845-1916) of Aurora, New York, was a physician and social reformer who advocated for vivisection reform. Less

Also included are papers pertaining to 1970 Peace Retreat and women's rights. Sarah Smith Ahmad, an NC State University alumnus, majored in political science (1968-1972) and was in Student Government as a representative of the School of Liberal Arts (now called College of Humanities and Social Sciences). The Schenck-Warlick Textile Mill Collection of Papers and Artifacts contains exhibit labels, a drawing, Articles of Agreement, and an iron spindle, all pertaining to the Schenck-Warlick Textile Mill, the first textile mill in North Carolina. Materials range in date from 1813 to 1871, with some documentation dating from 1991. The first textile mill in North Carolina was built before 1813 in Lincoln County, 1.5 miles east of Lincolnton. Michael Schenck built the mill and later partnered with Absolom Warlick to build a second in 1816. Through the 1820s and 1830s the profitable operation of the Schenck mills was a model to many more in North Carolina. The Schenck-Warlick Mill firmly established the Southern Textile industry. Less

Papers and audiovisual materials documenting Scott Chilton’s botanical research, teaching career, and personal life. This includes notebooks, research and laboratory data, articles, news clippings, collected works, Chilton’s own writings and publications, course materials, correspondence, legal documents, slides, photographs, and VHS video recordings. The collection’s contents date from between 1917 and 2004, but the bulk of the collection dates from after the mid-1960s. After completing his education and serving in the United States Navy, William Scott Chilton began teaching at the University of Washington. He moved to Washington University-St. Louis before beginning his employment in North Carolina State University's Botany Department in 1983. A natural products chemist, Chilton distinguished himself in research focused upon the phytochemistry, fungi, and plant-associate microbes, the structure of novel amino acids, and ethnobotanical uses of plants. He was well known for his research on a number of topics, including mushroom toxins, crown-gall metabolites, and the corn toxin DIMBOA. Chilton continued to teach and work in his phytochemistry lab after his retirement from NC State University in 2003. He died suddenly while hiking in August 2004. Less

The Scott Green Collection of Speculative Fiction contains magazines, fanzines, review publications, newsletters, and other publications containing or related to speculative fiction, especially science fiction, fantasy, and horror. Many professional authors are well represented in this collection, including Isaac Asimov, H. P. Lovecraft, Ray Bradbury, Evelyn E. Smith, and Arthur C. Clarke, among others. Also included in this collection is H. G. Wells's The Time Machine in its entirety (Famous Fantastic Mysteries Vol. 11, No. 6), and Isaac Asimov's story S as in Zebatinsky, considered by some to be Asimov's finest intellectual effort (Star Science Fiction). Poet and journalist Scott E. Green has been an active writer in a number of fields, including poetry, in the science fiction, fantasy, and horror genres. Green’s publications include his Contemporary Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Poetry: A Resource Guide and Biographical Directory and Isaac Asimov: An Annotated Bibliography of the Asimov Collection at Boston University. His poetry has been published in numerous print and web publications including Aeon, Amazing, Astropoetica, Space and Time, Star*Line, Strange Horizons, and Writer’s Journal. Less

The Selz C. Mayo Papers primarily contains documents from the 1940s and 1950s, when Mayo was a professor in the small but growing Department of Rural Sociology at North Carolina State College. Much of the collection consists of correspondence with fellow professors and researchers, organizations related to his research interests, and students and others whom Mayo assisted. Along with a limited amount of Mayo's writings and research, the collection contains records of his membership in professional organizations, including the North Carolina Rural Chuch Institute. Less

Shadrach Chaffin's journal documents agricultural life, business, events, and the weather in and near Vernon Township, Ohio, from the mid-1800s through the 1930s. The journal was used for varying purposes. Consequently, there is little discernible order in terms of pagination. As Chaffin wrote on page 133 of his journal, "When I am gone to return no more this book will be searched and read over be careful to read all, it will be some trouble, as dates run back as well as forward." Also included in the collection are a handwritten transcription of parts of the journal , a published genealogy of the Chaffin family in the United States, genealogical notes, and a clipping with a story of a Chaffin family in North Carolina. The Sharon Curtin Papers, 1964-2020, contain photographs, newsclippings, notes, correspondence, and other materials primarily documenting the NC State University campus and the Department of Poultry Science. There is some information on Poultry Science faculty members and staff. Also included is a book that Curtin wrote about growing up near Weaverville, North Carolina, and photographs and a DVD showing her husband, Terrence M. Curtin, in 2020. Diane Sharon Saunders was born in Weaverville, North Carolina, in 1942. She came to NC State University in the 1960s and worked as a research technician in the Department of Poultry Science labs under Dr. Pat B. Hamilton for many years. From 1981 to 1986, she was in the microbiology lab of the College of Veterinary Medicine. In 1987, she married Dean Terry of the College of Veterinary Medicine. Less
