Similar images also exist in other photograph subgroups. The North Carolina College of Agricultural and Mechanic Arts was founded as the state's land-grant institution in 1887, and formally opened its doors two years later. In 1917, the school was renamed the North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering, reflecting its broadened instructional and research activities. In 1965 the institution was renamed North Carolina State University (officially the North Carolina State University at Raleigh).

MoreThis collection chiefly documents Ralph Clay Swann's work as Technical Director at the Redstone Arsenal Ordnance Missile Laboratories in Huntsville, Alabama, where he was responsible for the planning and execution of rocket propulsion research and solid propulsion development. Contained in the files are news clippings, photographs, certificates, citations, lectures and speeches given by Swann. A few items relate to Swann's education, to his work in private industry, or to his work at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University). Born in West Virginia in 1912, Ralph Swann received a B.S. in chemistry from Morris Harvey College and a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dr. Swann was a research chemist and director of research in private industry from 1933 to 1951. He served as Deputy Chief, Assistant Director and Technical Director of the Ordnance Missile Laboratories, Redstone Arsenal, Huntsville, Alabama, 1953-1961. As Director, he was responsible for the planning and execution of rocket propulsion research and solid propulsion development. In January 1961, Dr. Swann came to North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) as Head of the Chemistry Department. He worked in that capacity until his death in 1967.

MoreThe Kenneth McCoy Scott collection contains project files, personal and professional papers, drawings and microfilms for buildings designed by Scott. Scott predominately designed residential and retail spaces, such as apartment complexes, shopping centers and motels. He also worked on educational and religious buildings. Project files include notes, correspondence, equipment catalogs, photographs, and contract information. The majority of the drawings are working drawings and shop drawings, although sketches, elevation site plans, and landscape plans are also included. Drawings may be on blue and brown paper, heavy translucent paper, sketch paper, and tracing paper. Several projects are also available on microfilm. Included in Scott's professional records are American Institute of Architecture records from the national and North Carolina chapters, and records from Scott's architectural firm. Personal papers include class notes from Scott's time as an architecture student, photographs, and personal correspondence. Scott's job book, an index to his projects (including file name, number, and project type), is available in the Professional Files series of the collection.

Ferrell Papers, 1940-2000, include publications, reports, memoranda, a scrapbook, and other items demonstrating the history of the North Carolina State University Dept. of Chemical Engineering and the North Carolina State University College of Engineering (formerly the School of Engineering); annual reports, memoranda, correspondence, proposals, reviews, and other items related to the administration of the Dept. of Chemical Engineering, the College of Engineering, and the Triangle Universities Computation Center (TUCC); and research papers, proceedings, reports, publications, and slides produced through or related to Ferrell's research projects in chemical engineering, the bulk of which pertains to his work on two-phase flow and coal gasification. James K. Ferrell (1923-2001) received the first doctoral degree awarded in chemical engineering by North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) in 1954. After working in industry, Ferrell returned to NC State in 1956. He became a full professor in 1961 and served as head of the Dept. of Chemical Engineering from 1966 to 1980. In 1965, Ferrell was instrumental in bringing the Triangle Universities Computation Center (TUCC) to fruition, a mainframe system that served NC State along with Duke University, the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, and Research Triangle Park.

Also included are plans of work and annual statements of objectives and goals for the coming year for many of the same programs. Although extension and demonstration work in North Carolina had been active since the early years of the twentieth century, the North Carolina Agricultural Extension Service was only officially created in 1914 as a result of the Smith-Lever Act. In 1991 the name was changed to the current one, the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service.

Roy Styring Dearstyne was a member of the North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) Poultry Science faculty from 1922 to 1955, serving as the head of the Poultry Science Department from 1930 until his retirement in 1955. He developed a testing procedure for controlling pullorum disease in poultry, wrote one of the first books in the nation about poultry diseases, and was instrumental in the development and expansion of the North Carolina poultry industry. N.C. State's Dearstyne Avian Health Center, built in 1968, was named for him.

The drawings series contains drawings from both Woodroof, Sr. and Woodroof, Jr., and includes floor plans, site plans, details, and elevations for a variety of projects. Project files contain correspondence, financial records, contracts and agreements, and other material relating primarily to Woodroof, Jr.’s firm. Office records contain correspondence, lists of prospective clients, personnel files, financial accounts, and promotional materials for Woodroof, Jr.’s firm. Professional papers contain general materials relating to architecture and design, such as publications from the American Institute of Architects and other professional organizations, catalogs, brochures, and clippings. Albert Cecil Woodroof (1895-1986) was an architect based in Greensboro, North Carolina. Woodroof received his architectural license in 1927. He worked for several firms throughout the Southeast before opening his own firm in 1935. His projects included residences, churches, and schools. Albert Cecil Woodroof, Jr. (1920-1991) was an architect based in Greensboro, North Carolina. He received a Bachelor of Science in Commerce from the University of North Carolina in 1940. From 1948 to 1963, Woodroof worked in the architectural firm of his father, Albert C. Woodroof, Sr., first as a draftsman and later as a partner. In 1964 Woodroof, Jr. opened his own firm, and later partnered with John S. MacRae and Martin A. Senell. Woodroof’s projects include churches, schools, museums, country clubs, shopping centers, and residences, primarily in North Carolina.

The bulk of the collection is composed of architectural records, such as drawings and sketches, that signify Matsumoto's architectural influences and his approach to project development over time. Included are materials that cover the various types of projects he took on, such as residential, collegiate, commercial, and community centers. The architectural records cover a wide expanse of projects primarily in North Carolina and California, with others in Virginia, Missouri, New York, Florida, Kentucky, Arkansas, and Illinois. The architectural records, publications, honors and awards, and architectural model contained in the collection portray Matsumoto's career as an architect, businessman, and leader of modernist architecture in the 20th century. The materials range from 1930 to 2009, with the bulk from 1940 to 1979. A project index to the collection is available online. George Matsumoto (1922-2016) was a Japanese American architect and educator who is most known for his award-winning, modernist designs. In 1948, Matsumoto became a faculty member at the School (later College) of Design of North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University). During his tenure at the School of Design, Matsumoto won more than thirty awards for his residential work, and his achievements in design were widely published. In 1961, George Matsumoto went on to join the faculty at the College of Environmental Design at the University of California, Berkeley, and opened his own firm. He stopped teaching in 1967 but continued his architecture work until 1991. In contrast to his residential work, Matsumoto's post-teaching work is mostly comprised of community centers and collegiate designs.
