Collection includes three brochures produced by the South Park - East Raleigh Neighborhood Association (SPERNA) to highlight people and places of interest in the historically African American neighborhood of South Park, including Chavis Park and the Historic South Park Archives.

The South Park - East Raleigh Neighborhood Association (SPERNA) is a part of Raleigh's Central Citizens Advisory Council, an organization linking community members and city government. SPERNA's mission is to identify, promote awareness of, and preserve the African American heritage in the historic neighborhoods of South Park and East Raleigh. In 2009, SPERNA partnered with the College of Design and Linguistics Program at North Carolina State University to develop a proposal for a South Park Heritage Trail to preserve and memorialize important cultural assets in the neighborhood. The multi-year planning proposal was presented to Raleigh City Council in 2014, received funding in 2022, and had a concept design approved in December 2024.
South Park - East Raleigh was formed after the American Civil War and is the largest historic Black neighborhood in Raleigh. As the Black population of the capital grew, several educational institutions and businesses were established to accommodate them, including Shaw University (1865), St. Augustine's University (1867), St. Agnes Hospital (1896), Hamlin Drugs (1907), Washington High School (1923, now Washington Magnet Elementary School), Chavis Park (1937) and more. The neighborhood became a central hub for African American life, culture, education, and business in both Raleigh and the state at large, which led to its being placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.
