State University's Department of Military Science and Tactics was introduced in 1894 under the direction of United States Navy Lieutenant Richard Henderson. Following World War I, the U.S. Army Reserve Officer Training Corps became the accepted method through which N.C. State, like other land-grant institutions, provided military training and education.

The Department of Communication Services provided communication leadership and innovation for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences to further the mission of North Carolina State University. The department delivered timely, accurate, research-based information to improve the quality of life for citizens of North Carolina, facilitated the effective transfer of information between clients and their audiences, trained and advised clients in effective communications, and provided communications services.By 2013, Communication Services was no longer a department under the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. It merged with Creative Services to become one of the three units under University Communications. The other units are News Services and Web Communications.

The majority of the letters are written to or from the various professional organizations Smith was part of: the American Genetic Association, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Botanical Society of America, the Genetics Society of America, the North Carolina Academy of Science, the Raleigh Natural History Club, Sigma Xi, and the Virginia Academy of Science. Also included is correspondence with the National Roster of Scientific and Specialized Personnel and the United States War Manpower Commission, regarding Smith's Selective Service status during World War II. Benjamin Warfield Smith (1913-1981) taught botany and genetics in the Agronomy Department of North Carolina State University from 1939 to 1978. He received his B.S. in 1934 and M.S. in 1936 from the University of Virginia and his Ph.D. in 1939 from the University of Wisconsin. During his tenure at NC State University he was very active in professional organizations such as the American Genetic Association, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Botanical Society of America, the Genetics Society of America, the North Carolina Academy of Science, the Raleigh Natural History Club, and Sigma Xi.

Also included are a copy of The Enciphered Diary of William Thomas Prestwood 1808-1859, a description and transcription of the diaries produced by Nathaniel Browder, and two of Browder's World War II-era cryptography manuals. Nathaniel C. Browder worked as a cryptographer during and after World War II. After his retirement he worked on a number of genealogical and local history projects. Among these projects was the researching, deciphering, transcribing, and editing of William Thomas Prestwood's diaries. William Thomas Prestwood, a descendant of the influential Coker family, wrote a ciphered diary from 1808 until his death in 1859.

MoreThe Walter Clyburn Taylor Papers consists of papers relating to textiles and their manufacture. These papers represent Taylor’s work for both his sophomore course on carding and spinning and for courses taken during his junior year at the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University). Included are handwritten and typewritten essays on a variety of subjects. Also present are tables of mechanical settings and several technical drawings for machinery, as well as articles clipped from technical journals and affixed onto pages of the notebook. All the materials in the notebook date from between 1911 and 1912. Born in 1889, Walter Clyburn Taylor attended the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts and graduated in 1913 with a degree in Textile Engineering. He served in the military during World War I and was stationed in Europe for more than a year during the hostilities. After the war, he returned to North Carolina and worked in the textile industry.

Bromberg studied at The Cleveland School of Art and The Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, where he painted murals for the Works Progress Administration.In April 1942 he entered the Army and was appointed to the War Artists Unit in 1943, where he painted, sketched, and drew the European theater. His graphic record of the war, published in LIFE, the New York Times, and other periodicals, earned him the U.S. Army's Legion of Merit in 1945.After his discharge, Bromberg won a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship for creative painting in 1946. He became head of the Art Department of Salem College in Winston-Salem, then in 1949 joined the faculty of the School of Design at North Carolina State College. He remained at NC State until 1954; during this time, he created a mural for the Erdahl-Cloyd Student Union.

The memory book is from Holladay's final year as a student at the University of Virginia. The speech given at the presentation of his portrait provides a genealogy dating to 1702. Some photographs of Shakespearean engravings are included. Other materials relate to Holladay's tenure as the first president of North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) and include a "Book of Incidental Expenses" kept by Holladay during the first year, 1889-1890. The published books are items that had been in the Holladay family. Alexander Quarles Holladay (1839-1909) was a Civil War veteran, lawyer, educator, Virginia state senator, and college president. He was named the first president of North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) upon its opening in 1889 and remained so for ten years until his retirement in 1899.

MoreThis collection has three color lithograph prints from Arthur Szyk's Visual History of Nations series. The nations included in the prints are the United States, Canada, and France. The Visual History of Nations series was commissioned by the Canadian philatelist and entrepreneur Kasimir Bileski in 1945. This series was meant to include sixty visual histories of founding and member countries of the United Nations but only nine were completed prior to Szyk's death. Arthur Szyk, 1894-1951, was a Polish-Jewish artist and one of the leading political artists in the United States during World War II. He produced hundreds of anti-Axis cartoons and illustrations in aid of the Allied war effort. His cartoons, which included caricatures of Axis power leaders, appeared in popular magazines like Collier's and TIME. Some of his caricatures were compiled and published in The New Order (1941). Ink & Blood, another compilation of Szyk's cartoons, was published in 1946. Szyk illustrated numerous works as well, one of his best known being The Haggadah (1940) which tells the story of Passover and outlines the Passover rituals.

The fourth is assumed to be taken by Lemmon as well, though his signature is not included on it. John Gill (J.G.) Lemmon (c. 1830-1908) was an American Botanist, Civil War Veteran, and former prisoner of war who acquired an interest in botany while living with his family postwar. He and his wife, Sara Plummer, went on to identify a wide variety of plants in the Western United States, establish the name of Mount Lemmon, and also established an herbarium in Oakland, CA. He was known as “the botanist of the West”.Burton Orange Longyear (1868–1969) was an American botanist, forester, mycologist, and gem cutter. Longyear studied botany and chemistry at the State Agricultural College of Michigan (now Michigan State University). He taught and worked as a botanist at the college before graduating with a Bachelor of Science in 1903. In 1904, he became an instructor in botany and horticulture at Colorado Agricultural College (CAC), now Colorado State University.

MoreThe Reinard Harkema papers contain student recommendations, student photos, professional correspondence, and other professional papers associated with Harkema's tenure as professor of zoology at North Carolina State University, 1936 to 1978. Letters make up the bulk of the written collection, with notable correspondence between Harkema and David A. Becker, Alva Harris, Reginald D. Manwell, and Sturgis McKeever. Other material includes handbooks, programs, and proceedings from various North Carolina Academy of Science events and meetings; and a photograph album with pictures of Harkema's comparative anatomy classes between 1966 and 1975. Reinard Harkema (1910-1978) received his A.B. from Calvin College and his Ph.D. in 1935 from Duke University. Harkema taught at North Carolina State University from 1936 to 1978 as professor of zoology with a specialization in parasitology of wild animals. In addition to classroom teaching, he headed the pre-dental and pre-medical program in the Department of Zoology. During World War II he served in the United States Medical Corps as a parasitologist, and was a consultant to the Air Force following the war. In 1956, Dr. Harkema was elected president of the North Carolina Academy of Sciences, and in 1969 he received the NC State University Alumni Distinguished Teaching Professor Award.

Dr. Lieberman was a prominent advocate of neuter-before-adoption as a solution to the problem of pet overpopulation, and was a pioneer in demonstrating that spaying and neutering puppies and kittens as young as eight weeks old was safe and effective. This collection contains his personal and professional correspondence, collected publications, administrative records, and video cassettes and slides, dating primarily from the 1980s through 2000s. Leo Lieberman (1914-2006) was a long time resident of Waterford, Connecticut where he practiced veterinary medicine for more than 30 years. He graduated from the Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1935 and joined the United States Veterinary Corps. Shortly after the United States entered World War II in 1941, Dr. Lieberman married Army Nurse Hazel Congdon before serving overseas. Following the war, he opened a veterinary practice. He was an active member of the Connecticut Veterinary Medical Association and served as president of the association. Dr. Lieberman was a prominent advocate of neuter-before-adoption as a solution to the problem of pet overpopulation, and devoted much of his later career to demonstrating that spaying and neutering puppies and kittens as young as eight weeks old was safe and effective.Dr. Lieberman retired from veterinary practice in 1986 and began splitting his time between Connecticut and Port St. Lucie, Florida. During his retirement, he continued his advocacy work. He died on February 15, 2006 at 91 years old.

The North Carolina State University company of the National Society of Scabbard and Blade appears to have been installed at the college by 1922 and remained active through 1975. The National Society of Scabbard and Blade was founded during the school year of 1904-1905 at the University of Wisconsin to foster the ideals and practice of military education in colleges and universities. The organization was inactive during both World Wars.

Grover Papers include materials documenting Grover's early career in private industry, his consulting work with the Joint Chief of Staff examining German textile and pulp factories in the wake of the Allied advance through that country, and his work as a member of the faculty of the College of Textiles of North Carolina State University (although most of the latter type of material may be found in the records of the college's Department of Textile and Apparel Technology and Management, UA 130.021). Included are company papers Grover kept from his time as an executive at Ponemah Mills in Connecticut, as well as records from his service in World War II in England and Germany with the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Technical Industrial Intelligence Committee. The collection includes correspondence, clippings, foreign currency from his sojourn during World War II in Europe, and official government notes and reports, from 1925 through 1958. Also included are several undated portrait-style photographs of Grover. Massachusetts native Elliot Brown Grover (1906 - 1997) joined the North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) faculty in 1944 as the head of the Yarn Manufacturing Department in the School of Textiles. In 1959, School of Textiles Dean Malcolm E. Campbell appointed Grover the head of the school's new Department of Textile Technology. Grover received an honorary fellowship from the Textile Institute in Manchester, England, the organization's highest honor, in 1962. He authored numerous publications, including the Handbook of Textile Testing and Quality Control (1960). He was active in numerous professional organizations, including Sigma Xi and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Grover retired from the university in 1966.
