The North Carolina Negro Bandmasters Association souvenir program includes a brief history of the organization along with images and profiles of each competing band in the 1952 state contest held at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro. The NCNBMA was founded in 1946 at North Carolina College in Durham, now North Carolina Central University, and held annual band festivals with performances by college and high school bands.
The North Carolina Negro Band Masters Association was founded in 1946 at North Carolina College in Durham, North Carolina (now North Carolina Central University). Allen Bone of Duke University led the organizing session and in 1947, the group held their first band festival at Winston-Salem Teachers College with eight competing schools. Participation doubled the next year, and by 1951, over 35 school bands were in attendance.
In 1952, Phillmore Hall of Hillside High School served as president. Warmouth T. Gibbs was vice president. Madison C. Lennon was treasurer. R.L. Carmical was secretary, and C.W. Hines was assistant secretary.
The North Carolina Negro Bandmasters Association Annual Souvenir Program, 1952 May 2, holds a single program for the NCNBMA's state contest. The pamphlet includes a brief history of the organization, images of board members, images and profiles of each competing band, and advertisements.
