The Mountains-to-Sea Trail Records contain materials relating to the activities and functions of the Friends of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail. These materials include meeting minutes for the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee with budgetary information, planning materials, organization correspondence, public surveys, and operational procedure. Also included are materials relating to partnership with the North Carolina Division of Parks and Recreation. Materials date from 2001 to 2021.

The MST was part of what is known as the "trails movement" of the late twentieth century. A predecessor of the FMST, the North Carolina Trails Association (NCTA) that formed in 1977 emphasized the need to include all trail users rather than just hikers. The FMST arose as a group focused on hikers, which later included other types of trail users such as equestrians, mountain bikers, kayakers, and canoers.
