Access to materials

Collection is open for research; access requires at least 48 hours advance notice. Because of the nature of certain archival formats, including digital and audio-visual materials, access will require additional advanced notice. Unless noted, digital media are not available online. Copies of unrestricted digital files will be provided for use in the SCRC Reading Room upon request. Access will be provided to use copies of unrestricted digital files rather than carrier media, such as CDs, DVDs, and floppy disks. Access to file transfer from external hard drive is restricted. Other electronic files may be unavailable or restricted due to privacy reasons, agreement with the donor, software is not available to interact with files, or because files cannot be retrieved from original media. We perform virus scans upon ingest and upon request for access. However, not all virus software profiles will catch all threats, especially newer, not yet recognized ones. The researcher assumes all risk when opening files. While electronic files are made available to researchers, some files may not open with current software or at all. Researchers may be required to find and use legacy software packages to read files. Additional conditions may apply.

The John Brake Papers include research and subject files, Broiler Breeder Research Workshop Workbooks, flash drives, electronic files transferred via external hard drive, and class materials both from Dr. Brake's teaching and from his years as an undergraduate at NC State University. Topics include improving chicken health, breeding, and egg quality. Materials range in date from 1950 to 2019, with the bulk of the materials being from the 1970s-2000s. The materials from the 1950s and 1960s are research papers and publications that Dr. Brake kept for reference. This collection also contains information on NC State University Chicken Education Units and other poultry science facilities.

John Thomas Brake (1952-2018) was a member of the faculty of NC State University, beginning as an assistant professor of Poultry Science in 1981. In 2001, he was named William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. He also served as Director of Graduate and Certificate Programs for the Prestage Department of Poultry Science from 2003 to 2017.

Biographical/historical note

John Thomas Brake (1952-2018) was a member of the faculty of NC State University, beginning as an assistant professor of Poultry Science in 1981. In 2001, he was named William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. He also served as Director of Graduate and Certificate Programs for the Prestage Department of Poultry Science from 2003 to 2017.

Brake was born on a small farm in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. After graduating as valedictorian of his high school class, he went on to graduate from North Carolina State University with a double major in Poultry Science and Animal Science. He completed his Ph.D. in Physiology at NC State in 1977. After a few years at Auburn University, he returned to NC State as an assistant professor of Poultry Science in 1981 and was named William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences in 2001. He also oversaw the university's Chicken Education Units and other poultry science facilities, and he served as Director of Graduate and Certificate Programs for the Prestage Department of Poultry Science from 2003 to 2017.

Dr. Brake published hundreds of articles and traveled the world as a consultant for the poultry industry. His research focused on nutrition of broiler breeders, feed milling and enzymes, hatcheries, and egg performance. He received many accolades for his research including NC State's Global Engagement Award in 2016, its Outstanding Young Alumnus Award in 1986, and the Merck Award for Achievement in 1995 (from the Poultry Science Association).

Dr. Brake passed away on July 31, 2018.

Broiler Breeder Workshops 1993-2018 (1)

This series includes printed powerpoint presentation slides and other materials from Dr. Brake's Broiler Breeder Workshops. These presentations cover a variety of issues related to broiler breeders.

A broiler is any chicken bred and raised specifically for meat production. Broiler breeder farms raise hens and roosters who are the parents of broiler chickens. The hens and roosters mate and produce fertilized egss that are sold to broiler hatcheries for incubation. (https://letstalkchicken.ca/farm-to-table/breeder-farm/ , accessed 2020 March)

Included in this series are materials from Dr. Brake's first Broiler Breeder Workshop in 1993. The series is arranged chronologically.

This series primarily includes CD-ROMs, files from an external hard drive, and USB drives of instruction materials used by Dr. Brake, presentations, and workshops. Also included are experiments, photographs, and other born digital materials. The series is arranged chronologically.

Files are arranged as received.

Access to Series

This series contains digital media. Because of the nature of certain archival formats, including digital and audio-visual materials, access will require additional advance notice beyond the usual 48 hours. Pending staff review and approval, access will be provided for use in the SCRC Reading Room upon request. Access to the file transfer from external hard drive is restricted. Access to other digital files may be restricted.
