The Frances Massey Collection of Phi Psi Records, 1929, 1972-1989 and undated, contain publications and photographs related to Phi Psi Fraternity, a national textile professional fraternity.
Frances Wilson Massey (1929-) was the first female faculty member in the College of Textiles at North Carolina State University, where she taught from 1963 to 1993. In the 1970s, she became the first female member of Phi Psi, the national textile professional fraternity.
Frances Wilson Massey (1929-) was the first female faculty member in the College of Textiles at North Carolina State University. Massey grew up on a farm in Spivey’s Corner, North Carolina, in Sampson County, as one of seven children. She attended East Carolina Teachers College, now East Carolina University, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Home Economics and Science in 1951. She went on to teach home economics in Nash and Wake County high schools for eleven years before earning a graduate degree in textiles from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. In 1963, Massey became the first female faculty member in the College of Textiles at NC State when she was hired as an instructor. In the 1970s, she became the first female member of Phi Psi, the national textile professional fraternity. Massey retired in 1993, after 30 years of teaching at NC State.
