The JC Raulston Arboretum Records contain newsletters, event calendars, brochures and handouts, plant lists, correspondence, archived web content, articles and clippings about the Arboretum and J.C. Raulston, and slides of plants and landscapes that were used as inspiration for the J.C. Raulston Arboretum Records from 1966-2006.
In 1976, with a master plan drawn up by graduate student Fielding Scarborough, Horticultural Science professor J. C. Raulston made the first plantings at the North Carolina State University Research Farm Unit 4 on portions of an eight acre parcel designated as the NC State University Arboretum. In 1981 the Arboretum was dedicated. In 1997 it was renamed the JC Raulston Arboretum at NC State University after its founder, who had passed away the previous year. In 2002 the Ruby C. McSwain Education Center was officially opened. A master plan that was developed in 2007 and updated in 2013 has guided the growth of the Arboretum, consisting of 10.5 contiguous acres in 2015.
