The NC State Department of Entomology and Department of Plant Pathology merged in 2016 to form the Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology. This collection includes two websites created by the department.
The study of entomology and plant pathology at NC State University began in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. At this time, classwork and research in the areas of entomology and plant pathology were conducted jointly with the state Agricultural Experiment Station. Some classes in Plant Pathology were offered at NC State during the 1890s as part of the horticulture curriculum, but coursework focusing solely on plant pathology did not exist until 1901. In 1945, the Plant Pathology section of the Botany Department was created, and in 1958 it became a full department. Entomology was first taught at NC State within the Department of Horticulture, Arboriculture, and Botany before being formally recognized as a subject in 1903. The Department of Entomology and Zoology was formed in 1912. In the 1950s, the Division of Biological Sciences was created, and entomology was established as a subject under the division. By 1955, the division was dissolved, and entomology was given its own separate department.
In 2016, the Department of Entomology and the Department of Plant Pathology merged to create the Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology. The department works to advance knowledge and solve real-world problems through research, teaching, and outreach. The department works in agricultural, urban, and natural ecosystems, works to protect public health, and promotes sustainable food production (https://cals.ncsu.edu/entomology-and-plant-pathology/about/ accessed May, 2025).
This collection includes two websites. The first is the website for the Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology, which includes departmental news, directory information for faculty, staff, and students, information about courses offered by the department, information about the department's research efforts, and more. The second website is an insect identification site for the entomology program, built to aid students enrolled in ENT 425: General Entomology at NC State University.
