The North Carolina Agricultural Extension and Research Services Photograph collection includes photographs and negatives relating to areas of animal husbandry, animal science, the agriculture school, 4-H Youth Development clubs, forest resources, crop and soil science, the extension service, insect management, and farm forestry. While each program has its own distinctions, all are involved in the research and education of North Carolina individuals, families, and communities.
Programs in animal husbandry was established in the 1920s and later became the Department of Animal Science. Sections within Animal Science that are part of the Cooperative Extension Service include: animal husbandry, dairy extension, swine husbandry, and horse husbandry.
Photographs documenting the Agricultural School include agricultural-related courses such as entomology, agronomy, plant pathology, chemistry, as well as student and faculty activities.
The College of Forest Resources and Farm Forestry photographs display forestry management and maintenance ranging from planting to logging operations within the state. Farm forestry photographs represent extension and individual farms, farm equipment, breeds of farm animals, as well as timber management.
The Extension Service photograph collection highlight conference meetings, fairs, farms and homes, home demonstrations, research stations, and goodwill missions to Europe and Peru.

The Agriculture School series contains photographs and negatives related to the administration of North Carolina State College of Agriculture. The photographs reveal the college's encompassing agricultural fields. The series includes agricultural-related courses such as entomology, agronomy, plant pathology and chemistry as well as student and faculty activities. Materials in the Agriculture School series range in date from 1909 to 1991.

The North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service's Animal Husbandry series contains photographs and negatives concerning the animal husbandry program. The animal husbandry program deals with multiple species of animals whose primary purpose is to provide meat for the table. Meat animals include beef cattle, sheep and meat goats. Materials within the Animal Husbandry series range in date from 1914 to 1956.
The Animal Science series contains photographs and negatives documenting the Cooperative Extension's mission to provide information on the care and management of farm animals and poultry. Photographs in this series document the Cooperative Extension efforts to educate farmers on the best methods for the production of beef, dairy, poultry, sheep, and swine. Also included in this series are fairs, exhibits, housing and equipment related to the field of animal science. Materials in the Animal Science series range in date from 1912 to 1992.

The Club series contains photographs related to the North Carolina Cooperative Extension 4-H Youth Development Department. North Carolina Cooperative Extension guides the 4-H club's special interest and enrichment programs which help youth make career and responsible life choices. Included in this collection are photographs that highlight the clubs activities, such as club week, club congresses, sholarship and awards, as well as international club events. Materials in the Club series range in date from 1953 to 1971.
The Extension Forestry Resources series is comprised of photographs and negatives relating to the management of forests by public and private landowners within the state of North Carolina. Photographs within this collection display forestry maintenance, ranging from plantings to logging operations in various locations within the state. Materials in the Extension Forest Resources series range in date from 1926 to 1965.
The Crop and Soil Science series within the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Department consists of photographs and negatives relating to crop growth, development and productivity. Topics in this series include field crops, fruit crops, peanuts, soybeans, tobacco, soils, and wheat grains. Materials in the Crop and Soil Science series range in date from 1906 to 1988.

The Farm Forestry Series consists of photographs and negatives related to the growth of North Carolina State University's School of Forestry Extension Department. These photographs document agricultural exhibits, extension and individual farms, breeds of farm animals, farm equipment and forest management. Forestry photographs demonstrate methods of timber management in order to promote healthy and productive forests. Materials in the Farm Forestry photograph collection range in date from 1923 to 1947.
Slides depicting insect issues and remedies at research farms, test plots, and other farms in North Carolina. Locations include Rocky Mount, Faison, Mills River, Johnston County, Halifax County, Bladen County, Davie County, and Montgomery County. Crops shown include sweet corn, sweet potatoes, lettuce, strawberries, cotton, and summer squash. Some images of insects (taken from books) are included, suggesting the slides set was used for instruction or training.
This collection is open for research; access requires at least 48 hours advance notice. Because of the nature of certain archival formats, including digital and audio-visual materials, access to digital files may require additional advanced notice.
