The collection, North Carolina State University: A Pictorial History Project Files, contains records related to the development, writing, and publication of the book North Carolina State University: A Pictorial History by Murray Scott Downs and Burton F. Beers. With the support of the North Carolina State University Alumni Association, the book was published in 1986 to correspond with the one hundredth anniversary of the University's founding in 1887. The book uses a variety of pictures to give an illustrative history of North Carolina State University, from its beginnings as North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts to the time of the book's publishing.

The book's authors, Murray Scott Downs and Burton F. Beers, were both Professors of History at North Carolina State University. They received support for the research and writing of North Carolina State University: A Pictorial History Project Files from the Alumni Association.

The North Carolina State University Alumni Association is a part of Alumni Relations, the unit at the University that officially interacts with graduates of the university. The Alumni Association was established in 1895, six years after the first classes were held at North Carolina College of Agricultural and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University).
