Records include committee meeting minutes, meeting schedules, meeting expense reports and budgets, planning reports, presentations, e-mails, handwritten notes, publications, and other items. Although extension activities began in the late nineteenth century with the formation of the North Carolina State College of Agricultural and Mechanic Arts, the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service was officially formed in 1914 with the passage of the Smith-Lever Act. Extension services provide education and programming in numerous subjects, among them agriculture, forestry, environmental sustainability, youth and family development, and community viability.
