The collection includes both David H. Howells' writings and his photographic work, with photography making up the bulk of the collection. This collection is divided into two series. The first series, Environmental Research Papers, is comprised primarily of Howells' writings, both published and unpublished. Topics include water quality management and planning, sediment pollution control, water pollution from toxics, ground water management, and water pollution from agriculture. The second series, Photography, includes negatives, prints, slides taken of black-and-white prints on display, and color slides. Information on Howells' participation in photography exhibits is also included, as well as some examples of published photographs. The subject matter of the photographs varies greatly, but there is a strong emphasis on water and the natural world. There are also photographic portraits of more than thirty people. David H. Howells was the first director of the Water Resources Research Institute (WRRI) of the University of North Carolina system. During his tenure at WRRI, Howells also served as Professor of Biological and Agricultural Engineering at North Carolina State University and Professor of Environmental Sciences and Engineering at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. In addition to his work within the state, Howells served on several national and international water program evaluation commissions. He received numerous honors for his contributions to water pollution control, including the U.S. Public Health Service Commendation Medal and a Presidential Citation. Five black and white photo cards, one is 3"x6" while the other four are 5.25"x8.5". The contents of the photographs all depict either fir or spruce trees. The smallest photo card was taken by botanist Burton Orange Longyear, and three of the four larger photos were taken by botanist J.G. Lemmon. The fourth is assumed to be taken by Lemmon as well, though his signature is not included on it. John Gill (J.G.) Lemmon (c. 1830-1908) was an American Botanist, Civil War Veteran, and former prisoner of war who acquired an interest in botany while living with his family postwar. He and his wife, Sara Plummer, went on to identify a wide variety of plants in the Western United States, establish the name of Mount Lemmon, and also established an herbarium in Oakland, CA. He was known as “the botanist of the West”.Burton Orange Longyear (1868–1969) was an American botanist, forester, mycologist, and gem cutter. Longyear studied botany and chemistry at the State Agricultural College of Michigan (now Michigan State University). He taught and worked as a botanist at the college before graduating with a Bachelor of Science in 1903. The John D. Mattox Papers contain photographic prints, negatives, and contact sheets, and papers depicting the personal and professional life of John D. Mattox. Personal portraits and snapshots document the lives of Mattox, his wife Mary, their son Douglas, and their extended family. Also included are photographs of the town of Wendell, North Carolina, where the Mattox family lived. The collection also includes photographs taken while Mattox served in Europe during World War II. Relating to Mattox’s professional career as a photographer at North Carolina State University, there are many images of campus scenes, student and faculty portraits, and campus publications featuring Mattox’s work. Wedding photographs, miscellaneous portraits, unidentified original and copied tintypes and cartes de visite, as well as rolled 35 mm negatives are also included. While the majority of the collection is composed of photographs, there are some papers such as news clippings, correspondence, business cards, awards, brochures, and grade reports which belonged to Mattox. John Douglas Mattox, Sr. (1911-1987) was a photographer with the Visual Aids Department at North Carolina State University from 1949 to 1974. A native of Wendell, North Carolina, Mattox attended North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) in the 1930s and enlisted in the Army in 1941, serving in Europe. He married the former Mary Elizabeth Davis of Columbia, South Carolina, and had a son John Douglas Mattox, Jr., called Doug. This collection is comprised of one sepia-tone photograph of John Harrelson speaking on the steps of the Bell Tower, ca. 1940. Several unidentified men are also present, some in military uniform. John Harrelson was chancellor of North Carolina State College (now University) from 1931 to 1953. The Memorial Bell Tower, to honor NC State students and alumni killed in World War I, was begun in 1921, but it wasn't completed until several years later and was dedicated finally in 1949. Less

Also the Physics academic software and user manuals, Physics educational software, correspondence and information about L.H. Thomas Lecture Series and documents related to Derieux lectureship endowment and lecture series. Professor John S. Risley (born 1942) conducted research on the utilization and effectiveness of computer technology to teach physics. Physics education research showed that interactive, hands-on collaborative student environments produce signific ant student learning. Computers enhance this approach. The primary thrusts in this effort included evaluating educational software programs, deciding which tools to use, structuring substantive student activities, implementing student/teacher tasks and evaluating the impact. These activities were then carried out in the new SCALE-UP classroom at NC State University. External efforts included publishing peer-reviews physics educational software, as editor of Physics Academic Software in cooperation with the American Institute of Physics, the American Physical Society and the American Association of Physics Teachers. In addition, his group was involved with disseminating in formation about new materials in the physics journals, conducting teacher workshops, and collaborating at professional meetings. Professor Risley was the director of WebAssign, an online homework, quizzing, and testing assessment system that delivers, collects, and grades and records student's assignments. This wide-reaching facility incorporated textbook problems, many different answer types and classroom management tools. It represented a new way of accessing student performance and helps student learn basic physics concepts. Professor Risley passed away in Raleigh on 5 April 2013. Less

This collection contains 7 black-and-white 3 x 5 inch photographic prints showing Frank Lloyd Wright visiting North Carolina State College on 16 May 1950. These photographs were taken on 16 May 1950 when Frank Lloyd Wright visited North Carolina State College. During the visit, Wright addressed an audience, of reportedly over 5,000 people, in the newly completed Reynolds Coliseum. This was allegedly the largest audience he was ever to address, one of the largest audiences ever to hear an architectural lecture in the United States, and was to signal the importance of the School of Design in American architectural education. The bulk of this records subgroup consists of black-and-white photographic prints that document the history of North Carolina State University’s physical campus and facilities from 1889 to the 1990s, but it also contains related color prints, negatives, contact prints, contact sheets, and slides. The images show interior and exterior views of buildings, outdoor facilities and constructed items, general campus views, views of the surrounding area, and aerial photographs. In addition, the photographs in this subgroup illustrate people, events, and activities related to the facilities and areas of campus they picture. This includes construction, renovations, beautification projects, groundbreakings, and dedication ceremonies. Some images demonstrate damage to or destruction of buildings, architectural and decorative details, and the moving of departments or items from one building to another. This subgroup also contains photographic copies of three-dimensional architectural models, architectural plans, artists renderings, sketches, floor plans, and maps In 1887, the North Carolina General Assembly passed legislation creating the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, a land-grant institution to provide education, research, and extension services to the state. When the College opened in 1889, it consisted of a 62-acre site with one building. As the university's enrollment grew in the following decades, more land was acquired and more facilities were constructed. As of 2007, the University’s Raleigh campus consists of the Main Campus and Centennial Campus and comprises approximately 2,100 acres of land. Its hundreds of buildings house more than eight million square feet of built space and accommodate a community of over 31,000 students and faculty. Less

Black-and-white and color photographic prints, negatives, contact prints and sheets, printing plates, and reprographic copies of images picturing individuals and small groups of people who have contributed to the history of North Carolina State University. Pictures of administrators, faculty, staff, students, and notable visitors and alumni are included, as well as class pictures. Most of the materials were created to portray a specific individual or small group of people: many are posed and have subject identification on the reverse. The materials date from the 1890s to the late 20th century. North Carolina State University was established in 1887 as the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (A&M College). The College opened in 1889 with one building - the current Holladay Hall - six faculty, and courses in the agricultural and mechanical arts, adding a curriculum in applied science in 1893. By the turn of the century the College had grown to some half dozen buildings, about 300 students, and had begun to diversify its curricula. In 1917, the institution's name was changed to North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (State College). In 1931 the College greatly reworked its curricula as it underwent consolidation. Along with North Carolina College for Women and the University of North Carolina, it became a part of the Consolidated University of North Carolina,. North Carolina State is now one of the constituent institutions of the multi-campus University of North Carolina system, having received university status, and, after some controversy, assumed its current name in 1965. As of 2007, N.C. State had a student body of nearly 30,000, nearly two thousand faculty, and research and program expenditures of over $440 million. Less

This collection contains approximately twenty photographs and a laboratory workbook of W. E. Wilson for an electrical engineering class. The photographs (all black-and-white) include portraits of H. K. Plott and W. E. Wilson, both NC State students. There are several snapshots of college age men and women, probably fellow students at NC State as well as students other nearby colleges. There are a couple photographs of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity house. None of the materials are dated, but they appear to have been created during the 1920s. Westray (or Westry) Edwin Wilson, also known at "W.E.," was a student at North Carolina State College (later University). He was originally from Asheville, North Carolina. He received a BS in electrical engineering from NC State in 1927. After graduating from college, Wilson served in the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of colonel. He retired to Clearwater, Florida, and passed away in the 1980s or early 1990s. Less
