The Carey Hoyt Bostian papers and photographs contains correspondence, news clippings, and photographs relating to Bostian's tenure at North Carolina State University as Director of Instruction at the School of Agriculture and as Chancellor of the University. Also included are Bostian's speeches and correspondence relating to his chancellorship. Carey Hoyt Bostian served as a faculty member at North Carolina State College from 1930 to 1973. Bostian joined the faculty at North Carolina State College in 1930 as an assistant professor in zoology. He became an associate professor in 1936, and a full professor in 1946. Also in 1946, Bostian was appointed assistant director of instruction in the State College School of Agriculture. In 1948, he became the associate dean of the School of Agriculture, and became director of instruction in 1950. During this year, he also became a professor in the genetics department. His title changed to director of instruction, School of Agriculture, in 1952. On September 1, 1953, Bostian became the seventh chancellor of North Carolina State College, and was formally installed on February 22, 1954. In 1959, Bostian resigned as chancellor in order to return to teaching. He helped establish the Faculty Senate, and served as its chairman from 1962 to 1963. The Larry K. Monteith Papers contain correspondence, reports, proposals, published articles, newspaper clippings, speeches, and artifacts. The collection spans Monteith's career at North Carolina State University, including material from 1933 to 1998. It covers his tenure as undergraduate, faculty member, dean, interim Chancellor, and Chancellor at the University. The primary focuses of the collection are the Microelectronics Center of North Carolina (MCNC), his research publications as an electrical engineer, and his speeches as Chancellor. Larry King Monteith (1933-2023) enrolled at North Carolina State University in 1956, receiving a BS (1960) in electrical engineering. He then received an MS (1962) degree and a PhD (1965) from Duke University in electrical engineering. After holding positions at Bell Telephone Laboratories, analyzing the NIKE missile system, and participating in a semiconductor research group, Monteith joined the faculty of North Carolina State University's Electrical Engineering Department. He became department head in 1974. He was named dean of the School of Engineering in 1978 and was named chancellor of North Carolina State University in May 1990 after serving as interim chancellor for a year.
