The Charles Kahn Papers contains design proposals and drawings, course materials, journal articles, pamphlets, brochures, oral histories, and photographic negatives documenting work of Charles Kahn and his students as well as local architects, including Horacio Caminos, Matthew Nowicki, James Fitzgibbons, Eduardo Catalano, and George Matsumoto. Materials related to Buckminster Fuller and Charter Industries (Geodesic domes) are also included. Items in the collection are described using titles found on Kahn's original files. Charles Howard Kahn was born in Salisbury, North Carolina. In 1952, he joined the faculty at North Carolina State University as an instructor in Civil Engineering. He was appointed Associate Professor of Design in 1959. Kahn remained at North Carolina State University until 1968, when he left for the University of Kansas. Kahn's research focused on thin-shell structures and membranes of long-span roofs for buildings. Notably, he designed North Carolina State University's Carter-Finley Stadium. The Eduardo Catalano Papers contains articles, news clippings, magazines, and books on Catalano's architectural projects and professional accomplishments, as well as photographs, digital photographs, photographic slides, negatives, positive transparencies, design drawings, and one videocassette. This includes books, articles, and other writings authored by Catalano, and diplomas, certificates, and certifications he received during his professional and educational careers. The collection also contains metal printing plates of Catalano's designs used in various publications covering his work. Many of these publications can be found in the Printed Materials, Writings, and Correspondence series. There is also a small amount of correspondence. Eduardo Fernando Catalano (1917-2010) was a well-known modernist architect and Head of Architecture at the School of Design at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) from 1951 to 1956. Catalano was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on December 19, 1917. He attended the Universidad de Buenos Aires and graduated in 1940 with an Architect's Diploma and honors for his coursework. Having received scholarships to pursue studies in the United States, Catalano relocated to attend the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard University. He graduated in 1944 and 1945 respectively with a Master of Architecture degree. At Harvard, Catalano studied under two masters of modernist architecture, Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer. Less

The George Matsumoto Papers includes blueprints, specifications, sketches, correspondence, publications, scrapbooks, photographs, contracts, financial statements, and other related architectural records that document the extensive commercial and residential work of George Matsumoto and Associates. The bulk of the collection is composed of architectural records, such as drawings and sketches, that signify Matsumoto's architectural influences and his approach to project development over time. Included are materials that cover the various types of projects he took on, such as residential, collegiate, commercial, and community centers. The architectural records cover a wide expanse of projects primarily in North Carolina and California, with others in Virginia, Missouri, New York, Florida, Kentucky, Arkansas, and Illinois. The architectural records, publications, honors and awards, and architectural model contained in the collection portray Matsumoto's career as an architect, businessman, and leader of modernist architecture in the 20th century. The materials range from 1930 to 2009, with the bulk from 1940 to 1979. A project index to the collection is available online. George Matsumoto (1922-2016) was a Japanese American architect and educator who is most known for his award-winning, modernist designs. In 1948, Matsumoto became a faculty member at the School (later College) of Design of North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University). During his tenure at the School of Design, Matsumoto won more than thirty awards for his residential work, and his achievements in design were widely published. In 1961, George Matsumoto went on to join the faculty at the College of Environmental Design at the University of California, Berkeley, and opened his own firm. He stopped teaching in 1967 but continued his architecture work until 1991. In contrast to his residential work, Matsumoto's post-teaching work is mostly comprised of community centers and collegiate designs. Less

The James Fitzgibbon Papers includes architect and North Carolina State University School of Design professor James Fitzgibbon’s architectural drawings for the Ralph Fadum House of Raleigh, North Carolina, the George W. Paschal House, also of Raleigh, the Mr. and Mrs. Robert W. Daniel House of Knoxville, Tennessee, and photographs and study models from his time working at Synergetics Inc. The collection includes color spot sketches of the exterior; site plans; working drawings; floor plans; shop drawings and blueprints and two undated drawings (1 sketch of interior elevation and 1 floor plan of 617 Kirby Street, Raleigh, North Carolina.); photographs by Joseph Molitor of the Fadum House; two models of the Globe Playhouse; photographs of study models and articles. James Walter Fitzgibbon (1915-1985) helped found the School of Design at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) in 1948. Fitzgibbon was hired as the associate architect for campus planning during the School of Design’s inception. He also served as a professor of architecture at North Carolina State College from 1948 to 1953. Fitzgibbon later served as president of Synergetics Inc., an association of Raleigh architects and engineers, before taking a position with Washington University in St. Louis. The Mies van der Rohe Chicago Promontory Apartment Building Blueprints consists of a set of blueprints for Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's 1947 Promontory Apartment Building in Chicago, Illinois. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969) was considered one of the pioneering masters of modern architecture. Born in Aachen, Germany, Mies emigrated to Chicago, Illinois, in 1938. That same year, he became Director of the Department of Architecture at Chicago's Armour Institute of Technology. He designed many of the buildings on the campus, including the S. R. Crown Hall, the Chapel, and the Alumni Hall. The 1947 Promontory Apartment Building in Chicago, a 22-story skyscraper in Hyde Park, was one of his many modernist high-rise designs throughout the city. The Promontory Apartment Building was unique, as it was his very first skyscraper design and the first to feature his exposed skeleton concept. Some of Mies' other works include the 1929 German Pavilion, buildings for the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Berlin National Gallery. Less

The Murray Whisnant Papers contains correspondence, project files, slides and architectural drawings, as well as other records related to Murray Whisnant’s architectural projects and other designs dating from 1959 to 2017. Many of the projects Whisnant consulted on and designed were located in Charlotte, North Carolina. There are also sketches and plans of projects that were never completed. William Murray Whisnant was born and grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina, and graduated from Central High in 1950. He then attended North Carolina State University and studied within the School of Design for six years, where he was influenced by faculty member Eduardo Fernando Catalano and visiting architect Buckminster Fuller, as well as Dean Henry L. Kamphoefner. Upon graduation in 1956 Whisnant returned to Charlotte and joined the architectural firm of Sloan and Wheatley. In 1960, he became partner to Charles Wheatley. In 1974, Whisnant left to establish his own firm, Murray Whisnant Architects. In 1990 Murray Whisnant was awarded the Kamphoefner Prize by the AIA (American Institute of Architects) North Carolina chapter and the North Carolina Architectural Foundation. Murray Whisnant was active in the Charlotte community and even late in his life advocated for municipal projects, such as “Energy Park”, to enhance the lived spaces in the city where he was raised.
