The records of the North Carolina State University Teaching Effectiveness and Evaluation Committee include meeting minutes, memoranda, committee reports on student and course evaluations and copies of the Emphasis Teaching and Learning newsletter. Materials range in dates from 1978 to 1994. The North Carolina State University Teaching Effectiveness and Evaluation Committee was established in June 1984 by the Chancellor of North Carolina State University. The committee reported to the Provost and had a broad range of responsibilities that included examining the effectiveness of current techniques of faculty evaluation, identifying and making recommendations on all factors affecting teaching effectiveness, collecting and disseminating information regarding experimental programs and the successes and failures of different methods of instruction, and evaluating the effectiveness of utilizing graduate students as teachers. The University Archives Photograph Collection, College of Education Photographs, 1910-1989 includes photographs of students, faculty, classes, research studies, and other activities related to the College of Engineering and Department of Psychology. Courses for training teachers were offered at North Carolina State College (North Carolina State University) by 1903, and the School of Education was established in 1927. After cutbacks during the Depression, the School of Education was reestablished in 1948 and included Agricultural Education, Psychology, Industrial Arts, Industrial Education, Recreation, Occupational Information and Guidance. By 1952, Mathematics and Science Education were added along with the Learning Resources Library. In 1960, the College became accredited through the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and has remained in good standing with NCATE ever since. Less

Teaching as a Profession, a lecture given by Wayland P. Seagraves for Occupational Education 103, March 7, 1930. This six-page report outlines the advantages and disadvantages of entering the teaching profession. Wayland P. Seagraves (1910-1992) received both his bachelors (1932) and masters (1933) degrees in electrical engineering from North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University). He was a member of the school's faculty from 1936 to 1948, and returned in 1957 after working as a radio engineer for WPTF. In 1969, the univeristy honored Seagraves with an "Outstanding Teacher" award. In 1970, alumni selected him as the top teacher in the School of Engineering. Seagraves retired from North Carolina State in 1976, after teaching for 38 years. He then moved to Salter Path, N.C., where he served as town clerk for ten years. Seagraves died in Raleigh. Less
