"A Trip Through European Forests" by Dr. J. V. Hofmann is a manuscript written by Dr. Julius V. Hofmann in December 1925 to document a trip to forests in Europe in which he traveled with a party including Dr. C. A. Schenck, twelve students, and a lumberman. From March 28 to June 13, 1925, the party visited forests in Holland, Germany, Switzerland, France, and London. Hofmann documented, among other things, the forestry techniques practiced in each location, forestry expenses, and forest schools. In February 1929, the North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later N.C. State University) hired Dr. Julius V. Hofmann to set up a forestry program at the college. Collection includes diaries, correspondence, field notes, manuscripts, articles, student records, photographs, negatives, photo albums, and artifacts, dating from 1865-1955. While the bulk of the material is in English, a substantial number of items, including a portion of the correspondence, diaries, and writings, are in German. This collection documents the professional and personal activities of Dr. Carl Alwin Schenck. These activities include his work at the Biltmore Estate and Forest and logging operations throughout Europe and the United States. In addition, this collection also provides significant information on the Biltmore Forest School and its students. Carl Alwin Schenck (March 25, 1868–May 17, 1955) was a forester and pioneering forestry educator in North America. Schenck was known for his contributions as the forester for George W. Vanderbilt's Biltmore Estate and as the founder of the Biltmore Forest School, the first forestry school in the United States, in 1898. After the Biltmore Forestry School closed in 1913 Schenck returned to Germany and served in the German army during World War I. After the war, Schenck spent most of the 1920s and 1930s travelling across Europe and the United States giving tours and lectures to forestry students. The Eric Hinesley Research Collection on Atlantic White Cedar contains digital files related to Dr. Hinesley's research interests in Atlantic White Cedar. Included are photograph files in tiff and jpeg format with related captions attached as a word document. Also in the collection are publications relating to Atlantic White Cedar and the Atlantic White Cedar Ecology and Management Symposium records, including the website for the 2009 proceedings. Materials range in date from 1907 to 2022. Eric Hinesley was a horticulture professor at NC State University from 1978 to 2010. During his time as a faculty member, he conducted full-time research related to Christmas tree production in North Carolina. He also conducted studies on wetland restoration with an emphasis on Atlantic White Cedar and Bald Cypress. Dr. Hinesley received a bachelor's and master's degree in Forestry at NC State University in 1971 and 1973, respectively, and he received a Ph.D. in Forestry and Forest Soils at Mississippi State University in 1978. Ralph Clement Bryant (1913-1994) was the son of R. C. Bryant, the first person to receive a forestry degree in the United States. The younger Bryant received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Yale University and his Ph.D. from Duke University. He joined the North Carolina State University faculty in 1952 and in 1970 was recognized as an outstanding teacher of the year. The younger Bryant was a member of Sigma Xi, Xi Sigma Pi, Alpha Zeta, the Society of American Foresters, the Canadian Pulp and Paper Association, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The Ralph Clement Bryant family papers consist of a notebook and typed pages related to coursework in silviculture. The notebook, dated 1899 and labeled "Forestry 3 -- Silviculture," belonged to R. C. Bryant, the father of Ralph Clement Bryant, who became Professor of Forestry at North Carolina State University. The typed pages consist of an outline of the subject of silviculture and a set of exam questions. These are undated and may have belonged to the son, Professor Ralph Clement Bryant. Less
