The records of the North Carolina State University Student Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) contain annual reports, membership rosters, photographs, publications produced by the chapter, and other general information on the activities of the chapter. The mission of the ASCE is to advance professional knowledge and improve the practice of civil engineering. NC State's student chapter of the ASCE was established in or before 1948, giving civil engineering students the opportunity to become exposed to the professional world of civil engineering, while also helping to coordinate many of the activities going on within the Department of Civil Engineering (later, Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering) at NC State. The Ralph Fadum Papers document Fadum’s career as Dean and faculty member of the North Carolina State University College of Engineering from 1962 to 1978. The majority of the collection consists speeches and press releases. It also includes correspondence, research notes, awards, news articles, and photographs relating to Fadum's professional career as well as family and travel photographs from after his retirement. Fadum's consulting work, as well as his involvement in military projects and with the American Society of Civil Engineers. Ralph E. Fadum was born on July 19, 1912, in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, and grew up in Niagara Falls, New York. He came to North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) in 1949 as a Professor and Head of the Department of Civil Engineering, holding this position until 1962. Dr. Fadum became the Dean of Engineering on July 1, 1962, serving the University until his retirement in 1978. Fadum was an adviser to many government agencies including the United States Department of Defense, United States Department of the Army, United State Air Force, National Science Foundation, and United States Department of Transportation. As a consultant, he was involved in solving many complex geotechnical problems, such as the construction of airfields in Greenland; the Alaska pipeline; launch facilities for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Apollo Project; the development of the road test program of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials; landslide stabilization for the Panama Canal; the construction of underground ICBM missile silos that could withstand nuclear blast effects; and the development of foundation requirements for radar stations in the North American Defense System. Fadum also had a strong interest in athletics. This 35-page report is a handwritten history and evaluation of the De Laval reaction turbine. It includes 11 diagrams, including rotor [design] and buckets, bucket details, a heat chart showing friction losses, a section of the nozzle, theoretical and actual velocity diagrams, the design of the bucket, governor details, the reducing gearing, the standard machine, and a chart showing the results of the tests conducted. While the author of this report is not known, it may have been created by John William Cox, who received his bachelor's degree in civil engineering from North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts in 1915. Cox also received a master's degree in civil engineering. from the college in 1921. Carl Gustaf Patrik de Laval (1845-1913) was a Swedish engineer and inventor who made important contributions to the design of steam turbines and dairy machinery. In the 1880s he built a small steam turbine turned by jets of steam, and in 1890 added a nozzle to increase the speed of the steam entering the turbine.
