The M. Edmund Aycock Papers contain programs, membership lists, educational resources, publications, correspondence and other materials related to the history of North Carolina's 4-H program. As a North Carolina youth, M. Edmund Aycock (1912–2009) belonged to 4-H clubs during the 1920s. He later studied at the University of North Carolina (1929-1933) and North Carolina State University (1933-1936). After working as a county Cooperative Extension agent, he worked at Wachovia Bank and also served as a chairman of the Wake County Board of Commissioners. Aycock was actively involved in the 4-H Youth Development program throughout his life and founded the Edmund & Elizabeth Aycock Scholarship. This scholarship awards $1000 to a high school senior who participates in 4-H. For his 80 years of service to North Carolina 4-H, he was inducted into the National 4-H Hall of Fame. The records of the North Carolina State University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Office of the Dean contain annual plans, budget information, correspondence, department heads' meetings information, departmental reviews, enrollment data, faculty meetings information, handbooks, publications, and organizational charts. Also included are correspondence and oral history interviews relating to the book Knowledge Is Power, a history of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences published in 1987. Materials range in date from 1911 to 2019. In 1905, the Board of Trustees of the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) first took up the suggestion of creating a dean for agriculture, but only under President Wallace Riddick (in 1917) was the position of dean created. In 1923, following the reorganization of North Carolina State College (later, University), the School (later, College) of Agriculture was created. In 1964, the School of Agriculture became the School of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
