The Banks Talley Papers consists of personal and professional papers of Dr. Banks C. Talley, Jr. This collection contains correspondence, diaries, newspaper clippings, photographs, agendas, and other documents dated from 1922-2012, though the bulk of the materials are from 1969-1983. The professional papers are from Dr. Talley's position as Dean of Students and Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs at NC State University, and from his position as executive assistant to North Carolina Governor Jim Hunt. Included are two diaries kept by Talley during the time that he worked for the governor. Banks C. Talley, Jr., 1926-2017, was born in Bennettsville, South Carolina, in 1926. After military service in World War II, he attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he earned a B.A. in history (1950), an M.A. (1956), and a Ph.D in education (1966). In 1951 he became assistant dean of students at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University). He later served as coordinator and director of student activities, associate dean and dean of student affairs, and finally vice chancellor for student affairs, beginning in 1974. The James B. Hunt Papers, 1945, 1953-2018 include videotapes, films, compact discs, audiotapes, photographs, correspondence, speeches, news clippings, ad slicks, position papers, advertisement scripts, cue sheets, stickers, buttons, artifacts, and brochures relating to the personal life and political campaigns of James Baxter Hunt Jr., who was a Democratic lieutenant governor, 1973-1976, and four-term governor of North Carolina, 1977-1985 and 1993-2001. The largest portion of the collection is manuscripts, which feature debates, speeches, correspondences, advertisements and personal notes. The bulk of the materials include Hunt’s 1976 and 1980 gubernatorial campaigns, his unsuccessful 1984 bid to unseat Republican Jesse Helms as United State Senator from North Carolina, and his 1992 and 1996 gubernatorial campaigns. Also included are materials documenting Hunt’s acts post-governorship, including the establishment of the Smart Start program, the Institute for Emerging Issues, and The Hunt Institute. Not included are any materials specifically documenting Hunt’s official acts as governor. James Baxter Hunt, Jr. (1937- ) was the Democratic governor of North Carolina from 1977 to 1985 and 1993 to 2001. After serving as Lieutenant Governor from 1973 to 1977, he served two terms as Governor, from 1977 to 1981 and 1981 to 1985. In 1984 he waged an unsuccessful campaign to unseat Republican Jesse Helms as United States Senator from North Carolina. The closely contested race, which Helms eventually won with 52% of the vote, garnered national attention as both sides engaged in negative campaigning. The campaign ultimately cost a combined $22 million, making it the most expensive Senate race in American history to that point. Hunt returned to elected office in 1993, winning a third term as Governor by defeating Republican Lieutenant Governor James C. Gardner. The Josephine Scott Hudson Papers include research papers, correspondence, journals, photographs, postcards, news clippings, and ephemera. The bulk of the material contained in this collection relates to Cassius Rex Hudson's career with the North Carolina Agricultural Extension Service and to the career of W. Kerr Scott, former governor of North Carolina. There is also material relating to Hudson's nephew, former North Carolina Governor Robert W. Scott. Daughter of Robert W. Scott of Alamance County, North Carolina, and sister of W. Kerr Scott, governor of North Carolina (1949-1953) and United States Senator (1954-1958), Josephine Scott married Cassius Rex Hudson in 1911. Cassius Rex Hudson, a graduate of Alabama Polytechnic Institute, was hired by Seaman Knapp in 1907 to serve as the Farmer's Cooperative Demonstration Work agent for the state of North Carolina. In 1922, he was placed in charge of "Negro Demonstration Work" for the state of North Carolina and worked as the director of that program until his death in 1940.“Negro Demonstration Work” is transcribed from the original materials.
