Barefoot Papers consist of professional publications and correspondence, academic and adminstrative papers, computer cards and diskettes, fossils, forestry study video cassette tapes, and computer generated dendrochronological statistical studies conducted by Aldos Cortez Barefoot during his tenure with the Department of Wood and Paper Science at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University). A. C. (Aldos Cortez) Barefoot earned his Bachelors and Masters degrees in wood technology from North Carolina State College in the late 1940s, and then received a doctorate from Duke University in 1958 for his research on the manufacture of plywood. Though Barefoot's career often took him overseas for extended periods of time, he remained a member of the faculty at North Carolina State. In 1962, Barefoot was named an Associate Professor, he was promoted to Professor in 1968, and in 1975, Barefoot was named Head of the University Studies Division at North Carolina State University.

Charles A. Pearson (1875-1966) was born in Asheville, North Carolina, and graduated with a bachelor's degree in engineering from the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts in 1894. During a six-decade career, he was first a partner in an architectural firm, then worked for various engineering firms, contractors, and railroad companies, supervising the construction of many highway and railroad bridges, and other civil engineering projects, in North Carolina and the South.

All of the material, except the map of the Port of Charleston, comes from companies that eventually merged into CSX Corporation. A graduate of North Carolina State College of Agricuture and Engineering (later University), A. Crane Jones was senior vice president of CSX Corporation when he retired in 1989. CSX Corporation was formed in 1980 by the merger of the Chessie System and Seaboard Coast Line Industries. Each of these companies had been formed by earlier mergers involving the Seaboard System Railroad, Seaboard Air Line Railroad, Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, Louisville and Nashville Railroad, and other companies.

There are also some miscellaneous photographs, publications, and other items. Between 1920 and 1948, North Carolina State University (formerly North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering) offered degrees in architecture and architectural engineering through the School of Engineering. The NC State College of Design, originally called the School of Design, was founded in 1948. At that time it included two departments: Architecture and Landscape Architecture. Since its founding, the College of Design has expanded to include departments of Graphic Design, Industrial Design, and Art and Design. The College of Design is located in Brooks Hall.

MoreThe James Wyche Green Papers contain correspondence, research, reports, teaching materials, and other information relating to Green's five years of teaching in the Department of Rural Sociology at North Carolina State College. Included in the collection are research materials about farm life and population, two of Green's interests. Of special note in this collection are handwritten and typed student papers and book reports, as well as student autobiographies from 1949. James Wyche Green, born in 1915, taught classes in the Department of Rural Sociology at North Carolina State College from 1949 to 1954. He later worked for the United States Department of Agriculture and served as a consultant on agricultural development for the State Department. Green became a psychotherapist with interests in meditation in the 1970s, and published the book Integrative Meditation in 1994.

Raymond Cecil Sawyer (1925-2018) was a modernist architect, who practiced mainly in North Carolina. After graduating from N.C. State College's School of Design, Sawyer worked with Alfred Lublin in Norfolk, Virginia, and with Owen Smith and Jim Webb before returning to Raleigh to work with Terry Waugh, becoming an associate and then partner. When Waugh returned to the faculty of the NC State University School of Design, Sawyer formed his own private practice, designing homes and other buildings. Sawyer worked on numerous projects at NC State University, including the University Theater. He also worked on projects around North Carolina, designing the Historic Bath Visitor Center and the gunboat cradle for the CSS Neuse, a Confederate ship in Kinston, North Carolina. He designed projects for Campbell University, Hillyer Memorial Christian Church, and, as a member of the North Carolina Medical Care Commission, designed hospital units throughout the state. Sawyer retired from the Medical Care Commission in 1992.

Charles McGee Heck (1881-1952) joined the Electrical Engineering Department at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) in 1913 to teach physics. He became Professor and Head of the Physics Department in 1917 and remained so until his retirement in 1946.

Moreland presented many of the materials at conferences, including conferences of the Weed Science Society of America. North Carolina State University Professor Emeritus Donald E. Moreland (1919-2010) served as a faculty member at North Carolina State for more than fifty years, teaching crop science, botany, forestry, and toxicology. During this time, he also worked on several projects for the United States Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service in Raleigh, N.C. In 1995, he became a Professor Emeritus.

MoreThe Monticello Architectural Records contain architectural and archaeological data pertaining to the restoration and preservation of Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's home located in Charlottesville, Virginia. Included are copies of publications; microfilm of field notes and drawings of Milton L. Grigg, restoration architect; photographs, slides and drawings of grounds, buildings, and furnishings. The Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation was incorporated in 1923. In that year, the Foundation purchased Monticello and strove to restore and preserve the historic home. Now known as the Thomas Jefferson Foundation, the group operates the house, the gardens, the Robert H. Smith International Center for Jefferson Studies, a museum shop, the Thomas Jefferson Center for Historic Plants, and the Monticello Visitors Center. Monticello is located on 5,000 acres in Charlottesville, Virginia. Construction of Monticello began in 1769 and was completed in 1784.

MoreThis collection consists of glass negatives and lantern slides chiefly depicting various aspects of agriculture in North Carolina and buildings on the campus of N.C. State University. Subjects include agricultural extension work, agricultural research, farms and farm life, animal husbandry, botany, horticulture, and crop science. One set of slides shows the university's first nuclear reactor; another comprises song slides that were presumably used at 4-H meetings or camps in the state. Many of the slides are hand-colored. Also included in the collection are photographic prints made from some of the negatives, manuscript material from the original storage containers, and examples of the original storage envelopes. The North Carolina College of Agricultural and Mechanic Arts was founded as the state's land-grant institution in 1887, and formally opened its doors two years later. Renamed the North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering in 1917, the school became part of the Consolidated University of North Carolina (later the University of North Carolina System) in 1932. The institution was restyled North Carolina State of the University of North Carolina at Raleigh in 1963, and two years later renamed North Carolina State University (officially the North Carolina State University at Raleigh).
