Holy Spirit University of Kaslik Phoenix Center for Lebanese Studies Newspaper Collection 1900-2020

Materials in this collection are in Arabic, Portuguese, Spanish, and English.

The Holy Spirit University of Kaslik (USEK), established by the Lebanese Maronite Order (LMO) in 1938, is a private Catholic higher education institution in Lebanon. The university collects materials related to Lebanese heritage and history.

As of 2022, USEK Library's collection housed approximately 200,000 pages of Arab newspapers and magazines along with photographs and other documents. Currently, USEK has multiple new and continuous projects and partnerships that focus on digitizing and preserving Arab newspapers and periodicals, such as the Project for Digitizing the Memory of Arab Immigration in Brazil (2018), which is a part of the larger project launched in 2016 titled, "Project for Conserving the Memory of Arab Immigration in Latin America."

The collection consists of periodicals from Brazil and Argentina that were published in Arabic, Portuguese, or Spanish for the purpose of consumption by the Arab community in Latin America. The various periodicals highlight the economic, social, and diasporic affairs between the Middle East and Latin America. Many of the periodicals aimed to educate the diasporic community and spark a continuance of the Arabic language and tradition.

The original print material for the periodicals in this collection are housed in various repositories in South America. Each periodical’s original source is listed in its description. The collection is housed digitally at USEK with copies given to the Moise A. Khayrallah Center for Lebanese Diaspora Studies for use in the Arabic-language Publication Database.

Within each series, periodicals are arranged alphabetically by title. Within each title, issues are organized chronologically.

The donor retains full ownership of any copyright and rights currently controlled. Nonexclusive right to authorize uses of these materials for non-commercial research, scholarly, or other educational purposes are granted to Khayrallah Center pursuant to U.S. Copyright Law. Usage of the materials for these purposes must be fully credited with the source. The user assumes full responsibility for any use of the materials.
