Gary Andrew Photographs of NC State University Cheerleaders contains four photographs of the cheer squad taken around 1967 by Gary Andrew. The North Carolina State College, now University, cheer squad formed as an all male organization in the 1920s and began including women in the 1940s. The squad has won a number of competitive cheerleading competitions, including six NCA Collegiate Cheer Championships.
The first cheer squad at North Carolina State College, now University, was formed in the 1920s. Early members include Red Clifford and Eddie Rufty, who graduated in 1925. Women began joining the squad in the 1940s, and the group adopted a wolf mascot in the early 1960s and a woman wolf mascot in 1975. In 2002, NC State founded an all-girl competitive cheerleading organization.
The cheer squad has won a number of accolades over the years, including the 1986, 1990, 1991, 2001, 2016, and 2018 NCA Collegiate Cheer Championships. NC State Cheerleading also won several gold medals at Cheerleading Worlds in 2016 and 2017, and the squad won the NDA Collegiate Cheer and Dance Championship in 2018.
This collection includes four photographs of the university cheer squad taken around 1967 by Gary Andrew. The students are pictured in their cheer uniforms with one wearing a wolf mascot uniform.
