This collection includes the September 1911 edition of A Broadside, a publication by E.C. (Elizabeth) Yeats. Yeats was a prominent publisher and member of the Irish Arts and Crafts movement alongside her sister Susan ("Lily").
Elizabeth Yeats was born in London in 1868 to John Butler and Susan Yeats. John was a portrait artist, and Susan was the daughter of a merchant family. The family associated with William Morris, designer and one of the leaders of the Arts and Crafts Movement.
Elizabeth often worked alongside her sister Susan, who went by Lily, and the two became prominent printers and members of the Irish Arts and Crafts movement in the early twentieth century. Alongside friend Evelyn Gleeson, they founded the Dun Emer Guild in 1902 to support Dublin crafters, artists, and designers. After a disagreement with Gleeson, the sisters left to form their own business, Cuala Industries.
Cuala Press followed the Arts and Crafts tradition but deviated by focusing on modern works of literature, rather than older classics, and by being woman-owned. Prominent writers featured in the publication include the sisters' brother W.B. Yeats, Ezra Pound, John Millington Synge, and Patrick Kavanagh. The press continued to operate after Elizabeth's death in 1940 and shut down in 1969.
A Broadside was published monthly in Churchtown, Dundrum County, Dublin. A subscription cost twelve shillings a year with free post. "The Petition of Tom Dermody to the Three Fates in Council Sitting" was written by Wolf T. MacGowan, and the illustrations are by Elizabeth's brother Jack B. Yeats. The poem centers on Thomas Dermody, an Irish poet who struggled with poverty and alchol consumption. Dermody died at age 27 in 1802.
This collection includes the fourth edition of the fourth year of A Broadside, which is a publication of Elizabeth and Lily Yeats at the Cuala Press. The publication includes the poem "The Petition of Tom Dermody to the Three Fates in Council Sitting" and three block print illustrations.
