The Encyclopedia was groundbreaking in its inclusion of the "mechanical arts," or crafts and trades, as exemplified in this engraving of the Needle and Cap Makers. This engraving depicts a workshop with the textiles tools and equipment shown individually underneath. It was engraved by Robert Benard, a French printmaker born in 1734.
