The Weed Science Society of North Carolina originated in 1981 during the North Carolina State University Field Research Tour. The first annual meeting was held in 1983.The Society aims to facilitate communication between academic, government, and industry weed scientists and promote safe, effective, and environmentally sound use of weed management technologies in North Carolina.

Weed science is the study of weeds, their biology, and the problems they pose to human endeavors and the environemnt. Weed science is used to develop economical, effective, and environmentally sound weed management strategies to protect agriculture and other ecosystems from invasive, non-indegenous weed species.
