The Wimmen's Commix Collection includes the first ongoing comic book series written entirely by women. It was published from 1972-1992. The series focuses on women's issues including sex, menstruation, gender roles, queerness, and politics.
Wimmen’s Comix is an all-women’s underground comic book series originally published from 1972 to 1992 that helped provide a platform for women comic artists at a time when men largely dominated the industry. The series used humor, satire, and personal stories to help challenge societal norms and highlight female experiences. Wimmen’s Comix focused largely on frequently taboo women’s issues such as sex, menstruation, gender roles, queerness, and politics. The series features the work of notable feminist comic artists, including Lee Marrs, Sharon Rudahl, Trina Robbins, Diane Noomin, Barbara Smith, Aline Kominsky-Crumb, Terry Richards, and Pat Moodian. The Wimmen’s Comix worked as a rotating editorship, meaning that each volume was edited by two different women working together who incorporated feedback from the rest of the group. This helped ensure that no one person had too much power. After the seventh volume of Wimmen’s Comix was published in 1976, the group took a long hiatus before adding new members and publishing the eighth volume in 1983. Generally, volumes of Wimmen’s Comix published in the 1980s were less political than those published in the 1970s. After the publication of the seventeenth volume in 1991, the group ceased making the comic book as its members were no longer willing to do the work for such low pay.
