The Tuncer Ören Papers contain personal lecture notes, publications, presentations, conference programs, and technical materials. As of 2025, Dr. Tuncer Ören is Professor Emeritus of Computer Science at the University of Ottawa. A detailed inventory of the collection is available here.
This collection is primarily in English, with some Chinese-language publications, French-language lecture notes, and dictionaries in English, French, Chinese, and Turkish.
Dr. Tuncer Ören is a computer scientist who has worked in the fields of modeling and simulation, artificial intelligence, and systems engineering since 1965. He was born in Istanbul, Turkey, where he studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Istanbul and worked at IBM Turkey before earning his PhD in Systems Engineering from the University of Arizona (Tucson) in 1970. His dissertation, “GEST: General System Theory Implementor”, was the first model-based simulation specification language for continuous systems. (https://www.site.uottawa.ca/~oren/, accessed August 2025.)
From 1970-1997, Dr. Ören worked as a professor of computer science at the University of Ottawa, Canada, and as a visiting professor in Austria, Brazil, China, France, Italy, Spain, The Netherlands, and Turkey. He has written over 600 publications and has contributed to over 500 worldwide conferences and symposiums on advanced methodologies for modeling and simulation, including taxonomies and ontologies, artificial intelligence (AI and simulation, AI and software engineering), agent-directed simulation, agents for cognitive and emotive simulations, and representations of human personality and emotions. (https://www.site.uottawa.ca/~oren/pubs/pubs-2002-02-Sim50.pdf, accessed August 2025).
After his retirement from the University of Ottawa, Dr. Ören worked with several global research organizations and committees on modeling and simulation, including the Information Technology Research Institute of the Marmara Research Center in Turkey, the West European Armament Group (WEAG), and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
This collection contains the academic and professional papers of Dr. Tuncer Ören, ranging from approximately 1968 to 2019 and covering topics such as computer models and simulation, taxonomies and methodologies, and artificial intelligence. They include lecture notes from courses taught at the University of Ottawa, Canada, and several European and American universities; solo and co-written articles and publications; bibliographies and programs from global conferences on computer science and simulation; technical manuals; and several published volumes and multilingual dictionaries.
A detailed inventory of the collection is available here.
This collection is arranged in three series: 1. Bibliographies, Taxonomies, Documentation and Other Materials; 2. Publications; 3. Lecture Notes.
