This collection includes architectural drawings of the I.O. Jones House built by architect William P. Rose in 1903.
This collection includes architectural drawings by William Preston Rose (1870–1952) for the I.O. Jones House, a Queen Anne-style residence located in Wake Forest, North Carolina. Constructed in 1903, the house was a wedding gift from Robert and Genoa Rox Hunter Freeman to their daughter Elizabeth and her husband, Ira Otis Jones. Designated a local historic landmark in 1991, the two-story residence features elements of the Queen Anne style, including a pyramidal roof, front-gabled wing with a cutaway bay, original one-over-one sash windows, and a wraparound porch with turned posts, sawnwork brackets, and gabled entrance bay. Later modifications include a Craftsman-style vestibule and a second-story sunroom addition.
The drawings were created by William P. Rose, an architect and builder who worked on residential, institutional, and commercial projects in North Carolina in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Rose began his career as a carpenter, and later gained recognition for his Queen Anne and Colonial Revival designs. By 1910, he was working as a contractor doing larger-scale projects and had established one of Eastern and Central North Carolina’s leading contracting firms. After the Great Depression, Rose suffered substantial loss and used a loan from his brother to start a building supply company. In his later life, Rose turned to farming, owning one of the largest farms in Wayne County, NC.
