The Reference Collection on Soybean Pests consists of "The Literature of Arthropods Associated with Soybean -- V. A Bibliography of Heliothis zea (Boddie) and H. virescens (F.) (Lepidoptera:Noctuidae)" with the key to the bibliography, bibliography cards, generic index cards, and cross-referenced articles covering literature from the 1950s to 1980s on the taxonomy and ecology of insects associated with soybean. Although some soybeans were grown in the US as far back as the 18th century, it wasn’t until the 1950’s that soybean became a major cash crop in the US. Less was known about its pests and their natural enemies than those of other major crops. In the 1970’s there was a major effort to pull together all of the existing literature about the taxonomy and ecology of insects associated with soybean. These efforts culminated in a detailed bibliography along with a collection of all of the cross-referenced articles. This collection was maintained by Robert L. Rabb and then by Fred Gould until 2015.

Fred Gould completed his B.S. at Queens College, CUNY, in 1971 and his Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at SUNY at Stony Brook in 1977. He has been a faculty member at North Carolina State University since 1979 and is a William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor in the Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology. He is also the former executive director of NC State's Genetic Engineering and Society Center, the winner of the UNC system's O. Max Gardner Award for research contributing to human welfare, and a member of the National Academy of Sciences.
Robert Lamar Rabb attended NC State University from 1947-1953. During those years, Rabb earned his Bachelors, Masters, and Ph.D. degrees. While he was a student, Rabb joined the Department of Entomology as an Assistant Entomologist. Upon graduating, the Department hired Rabb as Assistant Professor. Rabb stayed with North Carolina State University until his retirement in 1983.
