The Doris King History 491 Oral History Recordings include audiocassettes and one open reel tape of interviews and one seminar. These interviews are with longtime Raleigh, North Carolina residents about the history and development of Raleigh. Doris Elizabeth King (1925-2015) was a professor of history from 1966-1991 at North Carolina State University.
Doris Elizabeth King (1925-2015) was a longtime professor of history at North Carolina State University. She was the official historian of the American Hotel and Motel Association from 1962 to 1966. She taught at Campbell College, Stephen F. Austin State College, and Wesleyan College from 1951 to 1962. She joined the NC State University faculty in 1966 and remained until her retirement in 1991.
King taught History 491, an advanced seminar with different topics each semester. Topics covered in these oral histories include the development of Raleigh from 1900 to the 1920s including how the increasing use of automobiles changed the urban landscape.
The Doris King History 491 Oral History Recordings include audiocassettes and one open reel of oral histories conducted for the class History 491U taught by Doris King. The histories focus on the history of the city of Raleigh, North Carolina particularly in the early 20th Century.
