Collection includes issues of the Ahimsa Vegan Magazine (currently called "American Vegan") produced by the American Vegan Society, 1960-2024.
The American Vegan Society (AVS) was founded by H. Jay Dinshah in 1960. Dinshah, a lifelong vegetarian, committed to veganism in 1957 after touring a slaughterhouse. For 40 years, Dinshah served as the president of the AVS and editor of the Ahimsa vegan magazine, committed to helping animals through educating people. Dinshah believed in the importance of nonviolence, communication, and cooperation and published many books throughout his lifetime. Dinshah was married to his wife Freya for 40 years, and they share two children. Freya Dinshah worked with the AVS for the last 65 years, serving as its president since 2000. She retired in May 2025. The AVS began publishing Ahimsa vegan magazine in 1960. The magazine was later rebranded to American Vegan in 2001. The magazine includes editorials, news articles, recipes, information about events, and more. Ahimsa has reached thousands of people, helping educate readers on veganism and animal rights.
