This collection contains sample books, course material, and mid-century fabric design pieces used by Sidney Anne Tooly, a student in the North Carolina State College School of Textiles in the 1940’s.
Sidney Anne Tooly (later Belhaven) was a student at the North Carolina State College School of Textiles in the 1940s. She graduated from the program in 1947 and went on to work in the textile design industry.
Tooly’s perspective offers unique insight into the textiles program at that time since it was predominantly male. There were also a lot of international students from China, India, and Europe that worked alongside American students.
Tooly’s JP Stevens Corporation notebook, which she kept when she worked there in the 1950s, highlights new fabric patterns and designs. It shows the revitalization of the NYC fashion industry and significant post war evolutions in textile and fabric manufacturing and design as the US mobilized the full power of its industrial and creative complex.
This collection contains sample books, course material, and mid-century fabric design pieces. It includes notebooks and binders from 1948-1961. The notebooks contain fabric samples, designs, notes, reports, diagrams, flowcharts, and forms.
