The Alan Sykes Collection of NC State Athletics Publications and Memorabilia (1930-2013) contains publications from the NCSU Basketball and Football teams, NCSU memorabilia, newspapers, Agromecks, alumni magazines, and scrapbooks. The memorabilia consists of foam fingers, cups and bottles, flags, stickers, photos, and more. These materials were collected by Alan Sykes, an NC State Wolfpack fan.
Athletics began officially at the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts on March 12, 1892 when a football team made up of students at the college defeated the Raleigh Male Academy, a local high school, by the score 12-6. That fall, the faculty and trustees of the college first became involved with intercollegiate athletics. Since 1947 athletic teams at North Carolina State have been known as the Wolfpack. The University has been a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference since it was formed in 1953.
The publications and artifacts in this collection highlight Wolfpack athletics, particularly men's basketball and football. Men's basketball won the NCAA title in 1974 under Coach Norm Sloan and again in 1983 under Coach Jim Valvano. The football team won the Liberty Bowl in 1967, the Peach Bowl in 1972, and their first ACC championship in 1979. These wins caused a surge in demand of NC State-branded merchandise, as seen in the memorabilia series of this collection.
