The Fund For Animals Records includes materials about hunting, trapping, shooting (especially pigeon shoots), legal testimonies and court opinions, and animal rights.
The Fund for Animals was an animal protection organization dedicated to ending cruel practices toward animals, caring for animals in crisis through rehabilitation centers, and participating in building a stronger global animal welfare movement. Some of their campaigns included ending pigeon shoots, trophy hunting, animal lab testing, and animal fighting. FFA supported improving the lives of farm animals, humane eating, and advocating for captive wild animals, among other issues.
The Fund for Animals was founded in 1967 by Cleveland Armory to protect animals from threats posed by humans. FFA organized rescues of animals over the years and founded several animal sanctuaries and services over the years including Black Beauty Ranch, Duchess Sanctuary, and Rural Area Veterinary Services. FFA was also successful in reducing hunting campaigns and seasons. It helped to abolish the Hegins Pigeon Shoot, a pigeon shoot held annually in Pennsylvania until 1998.
Many of the records in this collection (and found in the Heidi Prescott Series) were from the tenure of Heidi Prescott, who was National Director of the Fund for Animals from 1989 to 2005. In 2024, Fund for Animals merged with the Humane Society of the United States (now Humane World for Animals). Prior to the merger, these organizations worked together closely.
The Fund For Animals Records include press clippings, topical files, legal documents and legislation, correspondence, and opposition research. Topics include hunting, trapping, pigeon shooting, and animal cruelty.
