This collection includes documents and hosiery samples from the Kellwood Company of Siler City, North Carolina. Robert McKinley, who worked at the Kellwood Company for ten years, was in possession of the documents found in this collection. However, many documents, patents, agreements, and financial records originally belonged to Robert M. Matthews. The collection contains both business-related documents as well as documents, photos, slides, and samples pertaining specifically to the garments themselves. There are many articles within the collection. The bulk of the material comes from the 1980s about twenty years after the company was established.
Robert McKinley began by working for Sears as a buyer in New York and Chicago. McKinley worked at Kellwood Company in Siler City, North Carolina for ten years.
Robert M. Matthews worked for Robert McKinley. During his career at Kellwood Company, he was able to acquire two patents regarding hosiery and panty-hose creation and material during early 1970s.
Kellwood Company was formed in 1961 due to the merger of Sears and other companies. Kellwood company still exists today and is acquired by a Hong Kong-based investor group.
