Dr. Subhash Kumar Batra began his education in India and earned advanced degrees from MIT and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the United States. He joined the NC State University textiles faculty in 1977 and served as the director of the Nonwovens Cooperative Research Center (now the Nonwovens Institute) at NC State University from 1991 to 1999. Dr. Batra is now Professor Emeritus at the College of Textiles.

Dr. Batra is now Professor Emeritus at the College of Textiles.
While at NC State University, Dr. Batra taught courses in textile and fiber science, nonwovens manufacturing technology, and textile and apparel management. As director of the Nonwovens Cooperative Research Center, Batra brought NC State University students and faculty together with leading textile companies to foster collaborative research and development initiatives. In 1996, Batra was named the Charles A. Cannon Professor in the College of Textiles and held this distinguished professorship until his retirement in 2008. As a Professor Emeritus at the College of Textiles, Batra frequently consults on textile and nonwovens technology, yarn, fabric, and fiber properties.
Over the course of his thirty-year career at NC State University, Dr. Batra published more than forty peer-reviewed articles in the Textile Research Journal, Journal of Engineering for Industry, the Journal of the Textile Institute, and other scholarly journals. He also contributed several book chapters to works on nonwovens and fiber chemistry. Many of these works were collaborative, reflecting Batra’s commitment to cooperative research and associations. Throughout his career, Batra worked with scholars from NC State University, Louisiana State University, the Israel Fiber Institute in Jerusalem, and other institutions. Although now retired, Batra co-wrote a textbook on nonwovens technology with Dr. Behnam Pourdeyhimi, of NC State University, in 2011. Batra is also an active member of several academic organizations, including The Fiber Society, a professional organization of scholars interested in fiber science, engineering, and technology.

Many publications were collaborative efforts and appeared in the Textile Research Journal, the Journal of Engineering for Industry, and the Journal of the Textile Institute; one article appeared in Yalkut: Israel Textile and Fashion Magazine and is in Hebrew. Some publications and correspondence pre-date Batra’s tenure as a professor of textiles at North Carolina State University (1977-2008), and represent his earlier work as a Research Associate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1970-1977).
Also included are course evaluations from a 2006 course that Batra taught at NC State University, “Introduction to Nonwovens Products and Processes.”
