The William L. Flournoy Jr. Papers, 1968-2019, document William Flournoy's career of advocating for greenways, open space conservation, and environmental causes in North Carolina. The records include information on his involvement with the Triangle Land Conservancy (TLC), Triangle Greenways Council (TGC), People for Parks (PFP), other environmental nonprofits, and North Carolina Department of Parks and Recreation, as well as other state and city government departments. The collection includes newspaper clippings, outreach and conference material, information on environmental legislation, and correspondence.
William L. Flournoy Jr., Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects, is one of the first individuals to propose a greenway system plan. Flournoy is a graduate of North Carolina State University (B.S., Recreation and Parks Administration, 1966-1969; Master of Landscape Architecture, 1969-1972) and worked for the Wake County Planning Department and the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources. Flournoy has worked in public services for more than three decades, working to improve the park system, bicycle transportation, and environmental causes.
Flournoy's final master's project was the production of a report titled, "A Report to the City Council on the Benefits, Potential, and Methodology of Establishing a Greenway System in Raleigh." This report, viewed as the first of its kind in the country, laid the groundwork for Raleigh's decades-long effort to establish thousands of acres of greenways along its network of streams and wetlands.
