Materials range in date from approximately 1946 to 2016.
Yates Mill Associates, Inc. was formed in 1989. Its mission was to restore, preserve, and operate the mill. Yates Mill Associates developed partnerships with Wake County and North Carolina State University, the mill owner and guardian, to develop a park around this significant relic. Today, this community resource also includes the A. E. Finley Center for Education and Research, and a 174-acre nature preserve.

Yates Mill is a fully restored, circa 1756 gristmill located in Raleigh, North Carolina. It is the centerpiece of Historic Yates Mill County Park, located in central Wake County. The mill is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is the only restored operational automatic mill in North Carolina and one of just a few in the country.

Materials are organized into four series: series 1. John Vandenbergh Files, series 2. Mabel Dorsey Files, series 3. Carolyn Solomon Files, and series 4. General Files. In each series, materials are arranged alphabetically, and thereafter chronologically.

The collection is organized into four principal series:
Series 1 includes John G. Vandenbergh files related to the Board of Directors meetings and operations. Dr. Vandenbergh was a Professor of Biology Emeritus at North Carolina State University. He was the president of Yates Mill Associates and has been involved in the development of the Yates Mill historic area in Raleigh for many years. Vandenbergh received the Henry Marshall Award for his outstanding contributions to the restoration, promotion and demonstration of historic Yates Mill.

Series 2 includes Mabel Dorsey files. In 1989, Dorsey served as the President of the Wake County Historical Society (WCHS) and initiated the restoration of Yates Mill. She had a major role in the creation of the Yates Mill Historical Park and Educational Center, which opened in 2006. Dorsey received Henry Marshall Award for her outstanding contributions to the restoration, promotion and demonstration of historic Yates Mill.
Series 3 includes Carolyn Solomon files. Solomon holds a Master of Product Design from the College of Design at NC State University. She was a member of the Yates Mill Associates Board of Directors and received the Henry Marshall Award for her outstanding contributions to the restoration, promotion and demonstration of historic Yates Mill.
